Thousands take FIITJEE examination

Thousands of students who took the FIITJEE Talent Reward Examination (FTRE), a competitive examination for students aspiring for careers in science and technology, have apparently coasted through the IQ assessment segment only to find a challenge awaiting them in the Mathematics and Science sessions on Sunday afternoon.

About 50,000 candidates, including 4,000 in the State and over 1,000 students across Kerala, took the examination spread over forenoon and afternoon sessions.

If Rashi of Chinmaya Vidyalaya on Taylor's Road found Science and Mathematics "okay," Aditya Anand of Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram found Physics and Chemistry papers "challenging" and played it safe by avoiding negative marks for questions he was unsure about.

V. Akshaya, VIII class student of PSBB, K.K. Nagar said the science papers were "challenging yet interesting." The girl has been undergoing coaching at the FIITJEE centre in the city as well preparing for level 2 of the National Science Talent Search Examination scheduled for May 10.

"We generally advise them to avoid negative marks if they are unsure of the answers," said her mother Padma.

Jatin Shravan, also of Bhavan's school said the questions were intelligently framed and required thoughtful answering. The VIII class student, however, was willing to take risks in the negative mark section.

Since its launch in India in 1992, the FIITJEE Talent Reward Examination (FTRE) has steadily grown in reputation among students of classes VI to XI as an important preparatory programme for aspirants for the NTSC, IIT and JEE examinations.

The Hindu-Education Plus had tied up for organising the examinations in the State.

This year, the FTRE was conducted in three centres in Chennai – DAV Mogappair, Maharishi Vidya Mandir in Kilpauk, and St. John's Senior Secondary School Mandaveli. The other examination venues in the State were at Sriperumbudur, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Hosur and Kalpakkam.

In Kerala, candidates assembled at designated centres in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Thrissur.

Top three performers in each zone, each class and each subject are awarded gold, silver and bronze trophies. Schools also get awards on the basis of students' scores in individual subjects

Schools get trophies if a student from the institution bags a medal for overall performance.

The results are scheduled to be announced on January 20. Scholarships worth Rs. 2.5 lakh are up for grabs for students with the highest scores.
