Students of the Chennai-based Alpha Arts and Science College have won the bronze medal at the 2008 edition of the SIFE World Cup, which concluded recently in Singapore.

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) is an international organisation that mobilises university students around the world to develop skills to become socially responsible business leaders.

The team from Alpha College , which represented India, had competed with students from 41 countries to clinch the third place. The Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada won the overall championship and the gold medal this year. The second place went to Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria.

Alpha College had earlier represented India in the international event in 2006. This year, students of the college had worked on a project 'Sea Change Through A Sea Weed', which was an endeavour to sow the seeds of economic opportunity for the fisher folk through seaweed cultivation.

According to a press release, university students, academic professionals and industry leaders who participate in SIFE demonstrate through various projects that improve lives of the people worldwide that individuals with a knowledge and passion for business can be a powerful force for change.

The Indian students had outsmarted their competitors from Poland, Morocco and El Salvador to reach the finals.
