Bharti Airtel to recast businesses into nine arms

Bharti Airtel, the country's largest telco by subscribers, will restructure its businesses into nine verticals under different CEOs,  as it looks to expand into areas beyond its mainstay, voice telephony.

India's fourth-most valuable listed firm with a market capitalisation of around $22 billion (Rs 1,06,000 crore) has already identified some of these verticals such as mobile commerce, entertainment, media, internet, enterprise services and small & medium businesses.

The company will also announce a new reporting structure that will give these new business divisions flexibility and independence to innovate, develop and implement new technologies to address changing demands of customers, Bharti Airtel CEO and joint managing director Manoj Kohli said. This reorganisation will also see its direct-to-home (DTH) business being spun off into a separate unit, he said.

Bharti, which surprised the industry by elevating its head of mobile services Sanjay Kapoor to a newly-created position of deputy CEO, is likely to announce these changes next month.

Bharti's upcoming reorganisation is aimed at providing opportunities to its large-talent pool of mid-level managers and to ensure these executives are not lured by rivals, said a person familiar with the development, requesting anonymity.

Airtel has three divisions at present-mobility, telemedia (DTH, broadband and fixed lines) and enterprise, which oversees the company's undersea cable business, national & international long-distance services and also services large corporates.

Last week, the company effected changes in its top management, besides elevating Sanjay Kapoor. It named Atul Bindal, its telemedia business head, as president for mobile services.

K Srinivas, who was executive director (East) for mobile services and head of its Sri Lankan operations, took over as joint president for telemedia services. Mr Bindal and Mr Srinivas will report to Mr Kapoor. The enterprise business will continue to be handled by David Nishball, who reports to Mr Kohli.

According to Mr Kohli, mobility will have three new business verticals after the reorganisation, telemedia will have two and enterprise four. The reporting structure will see the CEOs of the mobility verticals report to Mr Bindal, telemedia verticals to Mr Srinivas and enterprise businesses to Mr Nishball.

"We feel the new verticals have huge business potential. We have not captured revenues from these non-voice services," Mr Kolhi said. He also pointed out these organisational changes were proof that the company was proactively looking at the future.

"Today, if we identify and develop operational and organisational changes to address future needs, we then have improved ability to respond to technological developments. As revenues from traditional voice services decline, these verticals will provide us with alternate streams," Mr Kohli added.

The company is expected to end the year with revenues of over Rs 38,000 crore. It has reported sales of over Rs 27,100 crore in the first three quarters of this year.

Airtel and other telcos' books may face special audit

New Delhi, March 28: The government is likely to undertake a special audit of integrated telecom companies, including Bharti Airtel, facing allegations of reporting revenues in a manner that attracts lower licence fee.

Communication and IT Minister A Raja has asked Department of Telecom to have the case examined about any revenue loss for the exchequer caused by private telecom operators like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and Aircel.

DoT's action comes after telecom regulator TRAI found a jump in revenue from long distance segment, in case of Bharti Airtel, which attracts only six per cent licence fee as against up to 10 per cent for other mobile services.

An Airtel spokesperson said: "As a responsible corporate following the highest standards of corporate governance, Bharti Airtel has always strictly adhered to the regulatory requirements and processes.

"In our communication to the regulator, we have already clarified the queries raised by them, which are in complete compliance and within regulatory framework."

DoT has pointed out that the revenue from long distance operations has shown a substantial increase in the April-June 2008 quarter as pointed out by TRAI.

The regulator had carried out an analysis for five quarters (four quarters of 2007-08 and one quarter of 2008-09) and had asked the DoT to get the accounts of Bharti Airtel examined on this account.

Airtel most congested network, says regulator

New Delhi: Leading telecom player Bharti Airtel emerged as the most congested mobile network in the GSM space in October-December 2008 with competitor Vodafone close behind, the telecom regulator said on Monday.

As per the analysis by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for the period under review, Airtel had 14 congested (POI) - the geographical location where two networks interconnect and exchange traffic.

Against this, Vodafone had 12 POIs, followed by Reliance Communications and Idea with 11 each, and Dishnet Wireless with eight.

According to TRAI, the benchmark for the level of congestion at POIs between various networks is kept at less than 0.5 percent. This means, of every 200 calls between two operators, only one call should face a problem.

This also reflects as to how effective is the inter-connection between two networks. What it also means that at 14 POI, Airtel tops the list of call drops.

During the said period, the mobile subscriber base has increased from 315.31 million in September 2008 to 346.89 million in December, while the number of POIs with congestion has decreased from 129.

The telecom circles or states being most affected due to congestion are Bihar with 22 PoIs, followed by north-eastern states, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh-East and Uttar Pradesh-West - each having five, TRAI said.

Airtel to outsource last-mile broadband connectivity

Bharti Airtel, the country's largest private telecom service provider, is in discussions to outsource the last-mile connectivity of its broadband operations. The talks are with two infrastructure service providers, Alcatel-Lucent and Cisco, for outsourcing contracts.

The company provides broadband services through its subsidiary, Bharti Telemedia. 'Last mile' is the final leg of delivering connectivity from an operator's end to the customer's place. For broadband services, this can be either over wireless or through wired lines.

Outsourcing last-mile operations will help the company concentrate on its core competencies, even as it will help reduce cost of operations. And, as such connectivity needs a lot of approvals (in case of wired connections), this will help reduce time to reach customers, sources said.

Said an Airtel spokesperson: "Developing a strong partner ecosystem is part of Airtel's unique business strategy. However, as a company policy, we do not comment on any market speculation."

Alcatel-Lucent President (India) Vivek Mohan declined to comment and Cisco executives could not be immediately spoken to.

Airtel gets notice over mobile phone towers in south Delhi

New Delhi: Mobile telephony major Airtel Tuesday got a notice from the Delhi High Court after a group of residents from south Delhi objected to the signal towers it has installed in their neighbourhood.

Justice Ravinder Bhat issued the notice after hearing the plea of Sonia Singh, a resident of Nehru Enclave, Kalkaji, and other residents who have opposed the installation of mobile phone towers above their houses.

Seeking removal of the towers, the residents in their plea have argued that radiations coming from the mobile towers are not good for the health of children and pregnant women.

'The generators installed along with these towers create noise, which leads to hypertension among senior citizens,' the petitioners' counsel M.S. Ahluwalia told the bench.

After hearing the arguments, the court asked the telecom company to respond by July 20 and also directed it to stop installing any more mobile towers till the next hearing.

Airtel net profit up 8 percent, but user revenue falls

New Delhi: Telecom major Bharti Airtel Wednesday reported 8 percent rise in net profit in the quarter ended March 31, 2009 even as its average revenue per user (ARPU) slipped during the period.

The company's net profit in the January-March quarter stood at Rs.2,048 crore, up from Rs.1,899 crore in the corresponding period in 2008.

Total income too increased about 30 percent to Rs.10,296 crore from Rs.7,929 crore, the company said.

The group's net profit increased about 23 percent to Rs.7,859 crore in 2008-09, compared to Rs.6,390 crore the previous fiscal, while total income surged over 37 percent to Rs.37,504 crore from Rs.27,290 crore.

However, the company's ARPU dipped 15 percent to Rs.305 during the last quarter as against Rs.357 a year ago.

'Dipping ARPU is a result of the promotional free minutes offered by the company,' Airtel deputy chief executive Sanjay Kapoor said.

The minutes of usage per subscriber also dropped from 505 minutes to 485 minutes in the quarter, a decline of 4.3 percent.

HOwever, the company said its direct-to-home (DTH) business, which was launched last October, was making profits.

'We add about 5,500 customers everyday. We will soon expand to 1,000 cities from the current 304,' Atul Bindal, president mobile services, said.

Bharti Airtel has earmarked $2 billion for capital expenditure, which, however, excludes the third generation (3G) and tower businesses. It has set aside $1 billion for the tower business that includes wholly-owned Bharti Infratel and Indus Towers, in which it has 42 percent stake.

The company said it had 96.6 million subscribers as of March 31, an increase in the total subscriber base of 50 percent or about 32.4 million subscribers from that on the same date last year.

The company also announced a stock split, dividing existing equity shares of Rs.10 face value into two equity shares of Rs.5.

Airtel opens 300 service centres in Kerala

In a bid to provide more value added services in the wake of increasing competition in the telecom sector, Airtel has launched three
hundred service centres across Kerala to cater to all the telecom needs of the customers.

Airtel will select reputed retailers in each locality to run these centres, Mr Anant Arora, chief operating officer of Airtel, Kerala, said. ``They will be given training on Airtel products and services,'' he said. Special branding will be given to retail shops to give them a unique feel.

According to Mr Arora, with the entry of more players, the telecom companies will have to provide more value added services to stay ahead of the competition. Airtel will expand the number of such service centres to 400 after some month. An Airtel PCO will also be attached to each of these centres.

This initiative is directed more towards the subscribers in upcountry markets of the state. Airtel covers 95 % of the population and over 70 % of the geography of Kerala at present. The service centres along with Airtel's new initiative of specialized offering for activating or deactivating nearly 150 value added services on the mobilephone, will go a long way in attracting rural customers, Mr Arora said.

Bharti Airtel reaches 100 mn customers mark

Bharti Airtel today said its subscriber base has crossed the 100 million mark, making it the world's third largest 'in-country' mobile operator.

The milestone makes every fourth mobile phone user in the country a customer of Bharti Airtel, founded in 1995 as Bharti Tele-Ventures.

"The Indian telecom sector is seen as providing the most affordable services in the world has grown by leaps and bounds in the last decade.

"We are proud to have led the telecom revolution that made a positive impact on the lives of people in every corner of the country as well as the Indian economy," Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil Mittal told PTI here.

The company's equipment partners Ericsson and Nokia- Siemens and nearly 31 per cent equity partner Singtel were present on the occasion to mark the milestone.

"This remarkable journey to 100 million customers is a testament to the vision and commitment of the company that benchmarks itself with the best in the world," Mittal said.

Besides 25 per cent subscriber share, Bharti Airtel enjoys 30 per cent market share in terms of revenue. It's only behind two Chinese operators in terms of subscriber size measured within a country.

Noting that it has been adding more than 3,000 base stations in a month, Mittal said for the first time, an Indian company has emerged a dominant player in the world and that too was in the telecom sector.

Airtel looks at big-ticket acquisitions abroad

The country's largest mobile phone operator, Bharti Airtel, said it was looking at big-ticket acquisitions abroad in its quest to
double its subscriber base, after it became the third telco in the world to have more than 100 million customers on a single network.

Bharti, which launched its mobile operations in Delhi in 1995, announced on Friday that it has become the first Indian telco to have 100 million users.

Others which have achieved the milestone are China Mobile and China Unicom. "If we focus on India alone, we will reach 200 million (users) in the next two-and-a-half years, but this will happen much faster if we make an acquisition," Bharti's chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said.

While acknowledging that there was headroom to bring in more foreign investment into Bharti Airtel, Mr Mittal ruled out any further stake dilution in the company. "The company does not require intensive capital to expand. Our debt is extremely low. In fact, we have one of the lowest debt ratios," he said.

But Singapore's largest telecom operator SingTel, which owns 30% in Bharti, said it would be happy to increase its holding in Bharti. "Today we have no plans. We have a substantial stake," said SingTel chairman Chumpol NaLamlieng. Mr Mittal said he would play a global role within the company as it seeks to expand outside India.

Bharti has been lining up top global talent of late and analysts say the hiring of these top executives could be an indication that the telco is arming itself for a big-ticket acquisition. Earlier this year, it hired German communications major T-Mobile's chief technology officer Joachim Horn and just prior to that, it had roped in B Srikanth from Unilever UK and Shireesh Joshi from beverages and chips maker PepsiCo China.

On the ongoing controversy over the allocation of spectrum, the airwaves on which mobile signals travel, he said the telco would have no objection if the government decided to allot this scarce resource through auctions.

MADURAI: In an effort to tap the market in the rural hinterland, telecom service provider Airtel plans to expand its reach by establishing rural Airtel Service Centres (ASC) in the State.

The ASCs would act as one-stop-shop for all mobile requirements of customers in rural areas where the retailer, in order to provide the necessary information, had been trained and empowered to have a direct access to call centre agents for fulfilling the customer needs, said Rajiv Rajagopal, Chief Executive Officer, Mobile Services, Bharti Airtel Limited, Tamil Nadu.

Inaugurating an ASC at Kaithari Nagar near Tirupparankundram in Madurai district on Wednesday, he said that Airtel covered 95 per cent of the population in the Madurai zone and was expected to have 390 ASCs by the end of May.

The ASC basically works on commission basis for the retailer and in fact operates as a multi brand outlet where Nokia mobile phones largely with keypads of regional languages are sold for rural populace.

Airtel has 9,400 towers covering 95 per cent of the population in the State with a customer base of about 8.4 million.

It has also set up a unique Value Added Service (VAS) platform, a dedicated helpline manned by experts from various fields. It would also provide affordable mobile handsets bundled with an Airtel mobile connection.

Manchester united kicks off on Airtel

Some good news for Indian football fans. Airtel has recently signed a five-year agreement with Manchester United to provide exclusive ManU content to its subscribers. Reports suggest around 12 million of ManU's 330 million fans are in India. The features on offer include ringtones, animation and wallpapers, exclusive video clips of matches plus the opportunity to train at one of the Manchester United Soccer Schools run at Hong Kong, Seattle, Toronto and Dubai. Rush, it's kickoff time on Airtel.

A zoom for your iPhone

The feature-rich iPhone lacks one particularly handy tool, a zoom lens for its camera. Enter the Camera Zoom app that adds a 4X digital zoom to the iPhone. The app is easy enough to use—just move a slider on the screen to the desired magnification and touch the camera picture. It works like other digital zooms, by blowing up just a portion of the picture you see in the viewfinder. That does mean that the more you zoom, the worse the picture gets. While you can get the same effect by blowing up a picture on your computer, Camera Zoom has one major advantage: it's right there in your camera.

Another Apple surprise?

The rumours mill is working overtime. Apple is expected to announce a new iPhone at the Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday. What to expect? More memory with the iPhone now coming in 16 and 32GB variants; a sharp and energy efficient OLED screen; improved RAM and performance; video recording and editing capabilities; Wi-Fi movie and TV downloads; media transfers during calls; a digital compass and turn-by-turn navigation.
