Combined Engineering Services Examination

Combined Engineering Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India. The UPSC conducts the Combined Engineering Services Examination for recruitment of engineers to the four categories of Engineering Services: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. Engineers selected through the Combined Engineering Services Examination are appointed to various posts in governmental organizations like the Indian Railways, Central Engineering Service, Survey of India, Indian Ordnance Factories Service (Engineering Branch), Military Engineer Services, Indian Telecommunication Service, Central Power Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering Service etc.

The immense contribution of these engineers towards the betterment of society is therefore easily understandable Infrastructure planned, executed and administered by engineers recruited through the Combined Engineering Services Examination are used by us in almost every aspect of our daily lives, right from boarding a train to using a telephone or switching on a light bulb.

Combined Engineering Services Examination Application Details

Notifications regarding the Combined Engineering Services Examination are published every year in the month of December / January in the Employment News and other leading newspapers of India. Application Forms along with the Information Brochure can be obtained from the designated Head Post Offices / Post Offices throughout the country on payment of Rs. 100/- only. Candidates are required to mail the duly filled in Application Forms to the Secretary, Union Public Service Commission before the specified date for submission.

Combined Engineering Services Examination Eligibility Criteria


Candidates having any of the following qualifications are eligible to appear in the Combined Engineering Services Examination:

    * A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from any recognized University / Institution in India.
    * A pass in Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India).
    * A degree/ diploma in Engineering from a foreign University/ College/ Institution under such conditions as may be recognized by the Government for the purpose from time to time.
    * A pass in the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India).
    * A pass in Parts II and III/Sections A and B in the Associate Membership Examination of the Aeronautical Society of India.
    * A pass in the Associate Membership Examination (Sections A and B) of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (India).
    * Pass in the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959.

Besides fulfilling any of the above stated educational requirements, a candidate must be an Indian citizen belonging to the age group of 21 to 30 years as on 1st August of the year of Examination. Reservations as per governmental norms are applicable regarding age limits and job vacancies.

Combined Engineering Services Examination Selection Procedure

The selection procedure for the Combined Engineering Services Examination comprises two stages:

    * A Written Examination comprising of two sections carrying a total marks of 1000. Section 1 comprises of objective type questions on topics like General English, General Studies and the relevant engineering disciplines of the candidates. Section 2 contains detailed questions only on the disciplines studied by the candidates.

The standard of questions asked in the General Ability Test will be as may be expected of an Engineering/ Science Graduate. Questions in Section 2 will be of the graduation standard in Engineering.

    * Successful candidates in the Written Examination are required to appear for an Interview and Personality Test, which is the final stage of selection. This Test carries a maximum of 200 marks.
