Blood donation is an altruistic gesture, says Tiwari

VIJAYAWADA: Apparently moved by the overwhelming response to the Tiranga Unity Blood Donation Camp at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium on Tuesday, Governor Narain Dutt Tiwari said it was a humane gesture, which would go a long way in sending out positive signals to the society at large. The Governor dedicated the event to the martyrs of Mumbai terror attacks and Pingali Venkaiah, the designer of the national flag. He headed straight to the camp and spoke to a couple of youngsters to pat them for their noble act.

A sense of nationalism gripped people in the vicinity when the Governor unfurled the Tiranga, even as his right hand went up to salute the flag. Paying glowing tributes to Pingali Venkaiah, he said it was this Tiranga that had spurred many a youngster like him to take the plunge in the freedom struggle. Such an event would also serve the purpose of sensitising the common man on blood donation. Invoking great personalities closely associated with the freedom movement, he spoke about Bankimchandra Chatterjee who wrote the National Song over a century ago and the fiery Subhas Chandra Bose and his Azad Hind Fauj. Lacing his speech with poetry in Hindi that rekindled the spirit of patriotism, he said as a youngster he was imprisoned for over two years for taking part in the freedom movement.
Healthy sign

The message of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to the organisers of the event and people of the city was telecast live by a Telugu channel on an LCD screen.

Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, the brain behind the event, said it was heartening to see people from all walks of life coming forward to donate blood. "I can see a large number of girls, women and physically handicapped. This is a healthy sign and it will spur others to follow suit," he said. Senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah NaiduMayor M.V. Ratna Bindu, Krishna district Collector N. Sridhar, Joint Collector B. Ramaiah, Sub Collector Gaurav Uppal, Municipal Commissioner P. S. Pradyumna, Police Commissioner K.V. Rajendranadh Reddy, vice-chairperson of Krishna Zilla Parishad T. Padmavathi, physician G. Samaram, former MP Chennupati Vidya and others were present.

Blood banks struggling to meet demand

Scarcity is attributed to summer holidays as a majority of donors are college students

Rotary Red Cross Blood Bank is forced to insist on replacement of blood bags

Almost 70 per cent of road accident victims die for want of blood

VIJAYAWADA: Blood may be thicker than water, but supplies of it during summer are something difficult to get. City blood banks are reeling under a summer slump, with people often being forced to return empty-handed or with fewer units than what they actually need.

There simply is not enough blood available to continue to meet all routine hospital needs and respond to emergency surgeries. Blood banks have been struggling to keep their inventories afloat expecting blood donors to respond to their call just to keep pace with the needs of the hospitals.

"Hospitals take to selective surgeries during summer months. But we are unable to meet even the limited demand," laments S. Madan Mohan, Chief Medical Officer of the Rotary Red Cross Blood Bank at Gandhinagar.

This blood bank, which has the record of highest collection of blood units in the State, on an average collects nearly 800 units of blood every month and almost 8,000 units annually. But it is forced to insist on replacement of blood bags due to the paucity.

The scarcity is mainly attributed to summer holidays for educational institutions. A major chunk of blood donors are college students who are either busy preparing for exams or are away on a vacation. Factors like heat exhaustion and the list of dos and don'ts for the donors also play spoilsport. A number of organisations are holding blood donation camps. A recent camp organised by the Lions Club of Vijayawada East, in coordination with the Teaching Fish, generated only 30 units of blood.
Poor response

"It was a poor response but we intend to continue our efforts and expect good response to the camps we propose to conduct during May-end and later," says B. Jagan Mohan Rao, president of the club.

Only 50 per cent of the population is 'fit' to donate blood and only four of every 1,000 persons come forward for the purpose. Close to 95 per cent of the donors are males and only the remaining are females, thanks to the low haemoglobin percentage or their anaemic condition.

The State needs nearly 8 lakh units of blood every year against the availability of 6.75 lakh units, indicating a clear dearth of nearly 1.5 lakh units. "Almost 70 per cent of the road accident victims die due to want of blood," laments Dr. Madan Mohan. Blood can be stored in the temperatures of 2-6 degree centigrade for 35 days. But when fragmented into components like red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets, they can be stored for a varied period.

"There is a dire need to shatter the misconception that blood donation leads to weakness. A donor's blood is replenished in three weeks. All we need to realise is that today it may be somebody... tomorrow it could be you," Dr. Madan Mohan says.

The theme of the meeting organised by the district Police department was donating blood and making others donate blood too. The campaign was conceived by Superintendent of Police M.K. Singh last month.

The police have formed a volunteer system wherein 10 persons from different municipal divisions will donate or make others donate blood every day. The awareness meet was held for volunteers of the campaign.

Speaking at the meet, government Whip S. Sailajanath, Mayor R. Parasuram and the SP stated that blood donation was one of the noblest acts and it should be taken up by everybody with "one for all and all for one" concept.
Inspiration

The campaign taken up here should inspire other districts to follow suit, they said.

They told the volunteers to allay misgivings about blood donation among general public.

Blood donation by healthy persons would save lives of others, they noted. A monitoring committee would be formed to oversee the campaign to be launched from July 1.

Those willing to donate blood could approach the police at the police outpost in the hospital. District secretary of Indian Red Cross Society Y. Ramasubbaiah, GGH Superintendent of G. Jagannath, Deputy Superintendent of Police Anantapur D. Satyanarayana Rao and others participated.

The SP offered to make the hospital premises clean and green soon with the help of police personnel.
