KOLAR: The district unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India and Red Cross are jointly organising a blood donation camp at Patrakartara Bhavan here in association with the R.L. Jalappa Blood Bank, to commemorate the 101st birth anniversary of revolutionary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

Rajahmundry: Mayor A. Veeraraghavamma on Wednesday launched a rally of blood donors from the autonomous college. A song on the importance of blood donation authored by Malladi Radha and composed and sung by noted playback singer S. Janaki was released by the Mayor at a meeting organised after the rally.

Corporation Bank is organising a blood donation camp in Bangalore in association with Rotary, TTK Foundation and Rastrothana Blood Bank on October 2, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. CHENNAI: The State government has proposed to set up six mobile blood banks across the State, said Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society's project director Supriya Sahu.At a continuing medical education programme organised by TANSACS and the Department of Transfusion Medicine of Government Stanley Medical College, she said 82 per cent of the blood procured by blood banks in the State was through voluntary donations.

The State stood second in voluntary blood donation, next only to West Bengal. To improve the quality of blood, component centres would be established in six government teaching medical institutions taking the total to 12 such centres across the State, she said.Ms. Sahu urged hospital authorities to present a proposal to the State government to set up a pilot project for nucleic acid testing that would provide the results of test for infection in two days.The mobile blood bank in Madras Medical College to which the Government General Hospital is attached would shortly roll out it's mobile unit.

Stanley has been awarded for three consecutive years for its work in blood collection and testing. This year it was presented an award for its research work.The blood collected at the hospital is only through voluntary donations, said N. Rajakumar, head of the department. At present, the collected blood is tested for malaria, HIV, Hepatitis B and C and Syphilis.The CME programme was meant for postgraduates, house surgeons, students and doctors to sensitise them to the rational use of blood.

At a blood donation camp conducted by Rotary Club Vizag Couples, 73 donors of Pydah PG College donated blood for AS Raja Blood Bank, which can produce platelets too and an equal number of donors to the Rotary Blood Bank. Club president K.R.B. Prakash and secretary P. Krishnakanth coordinated the event. Chairman Pydah Krishnamohan motivated students to contribute to the noble cause.

TIRUNELVELI: A blood donation camp was organised at Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project Hospital by Anuvijay Township Ladies' Club on Friday to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Project Director, KKNPP, K.C. Purohit and Club president Anjana Purohit inaugurated the camp. Mr. Purohit lauded the club members for the blood donation camp in which 55 persons donated blood.

Blood Donation

    * Person above 18 years of age and over 50 Kgs. in weight can donate blood once in three months.

    * A normal adult has five to six liters of blood in his/her body of which only 300 ml is used during blood donation.

    * This blood is replaced by your body within 24 to 48 hours!

    * No special diet, rest or medicine is required after blood donation.

    * The donor should not have taken any medicine in the last 48 hours.

    * The donor should not have contacted jaundice in the previous three years.

    * Every donor is given a medical checkup prior to donation to see if he/she is medically fit and doesn't suffer from anemia, high blood pressure etc.,

    * The donor cannot contract AIDS or any other disease by donating blood.

KADAPA: Thirty persons donated blood at a blood donation camp organised at Rayachoti Government Hospital on Monday by a Trust, a NGO, to be sent to the injured persons of Mumbai terror attack, Trust convener Y. Nagi Reddy said.

Doctors of Ruia Hospital, Tirupati, led by Dr. R.R. Reddy collected blood fromthe donors to be sent to needy hospitals in Mumbai, Janardhan, co-convener of the NGO said.

GUNTUR: As a solidarity gesture with the Mumbaikars and the security personnel, who fought to drive away the terrorists, about 200 students of Vignan Group of Educational institutions donated blood on Vadlamudi campus on Thursday.

CUDDALORE: Volunteers of the National Service Scheme and the Youth Red Cross of IFET College of Engineering, Villupuram, donated 50 units of blood on Tuesday.

Chennai: Over 80 units of blood were collected from students and staff of Sankara Arts and Science College, Enathur, Kancheepuram during a blood donation camp organised by the Rotary Club of Madras Fort recently. A team of doctors and staff from Rotary Central TTK-VHS Blood Bank participated in the camp inaugurated by K. Rajesh, president of the Club.

GUNTUR: Total quantum of blood needed in Guntur district in 2009-10 financial year has been projected at 45,000 units coming from voluntary blood donors, for which the APSACS proposes to involve youth in a big way to promote awareness among them. On the second day of the three-day pilot grassroots level action plan preparation exercise taken up in Guntur district for the first time in the country, the meeting identified the need for DNA-PCR kits at all blood banks for organising quick HIV test to reduce new infections through transfusion.

The need for replacement blood donations at Government blood banks would be increased to 40 per cent from current 20 per cent and issuing blood only from voluntary donors will come down to 60 per cent from current 80 per cent. The APSACS Additional Project Director, B. Kalidas, said that the number of blood donation camps had also gone up.

Youth would be encouraged to open blood donation clubs in colleges and affiliated to political parties. Training would be given to doctors on utilisation of blood concept of transfusion by developing new IEC material. Revival of insurance scheme for voluntary donors had also been proposed, Balasahayoga District Coordinator Md. Subhani said.

Students of Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science for Women, Madhanangkuppam, donated 63 units of blood at a camp organised recently by the Rotary Club of Aarch city Madras and the college.

The Club's president V.S. Sridhar lauded the students for serving the society through blood donation. On the same day, the students observed Global Harmony Day in commemoration of the birthday of the college's honorary founder Daisaku Ikeda.

Tuticorin: The Tamil Nadu Government Employees' Association conducted a blood donation camp on its premises here on Saturday to commemorate its silver jubilee celebrations.

Inaugurating the camp, Collector R. Palaniyandi praised the gesture of donors, especially those who pledged to donate eyes and other organs after death.

A. Mathivanan, zonal president of the association, presided over the function.
