Driving home the safety message

As part of the 'Road Safety Week' celebrations, Regional Transport Officer (RTO)- North, on Tuesday organised a blood donation camp in association with the Lions Blood Bank at Vyasarpadi.

"We had a good response for the camp, which began by 10 am, and more than 110 people, including women, donated blood voluntarily, said P Vijayaraj, RTO (North). Road safety week is being observed throughout the country every year during the first week of January. "The theme of this year's celebrations is 'Carefully Drive, Reach Alive'.

In 2008, up to November, 904 persons were killed in 816 fatal road accidents, he said.

10-day handicraft exhibition begins

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation is organising an all India handicrafts sourcing show with a rich diversity of colourful and artistic handicrafts at Valluvar Kottam.

Speaking at its inauguration here on Monday, Chairman and Managing Director of the Corporation R.Rajagopal said: "We expect Rs.2 crore as revenue from the sale of the handicrafts during the 10-day exhibition."He said the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and the Marghazi music festival would boost the sale of the various handicrafts by bringing more visitors from across India and the world.Craftsmen from various parts of India have showcased their handicrafts in around 200 stalls. Chief Secretary K.S.Sripathi inaugurated the exhibition."Many of the products are crafted by women belonging to self-help groups," said Rajeswari Chandrasekaran at one of the stalls.

Prominent among the crafts on display are bronze icons of Swamimalai, stone carvings, Tanjore paintings and art plates, artistic lamps, woollen carpets, kalamkari paintings, natural fibre products and woollen products. Salim Ali's collection of birds shaped by the handicraft of Ramkumar Takur of Ujjain was on exhibition at one of the stalls.The objective of organising the sourcing show is to give the craftsmen a platform for showcasing the best and innovative handicrafts, said Mr.Rajagopal.Many award-winning craftsmen will be directly interacting with the consumers at the show.

The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation has also arranged a 'special buyer-seller meet' on January 13 elsewhere in Chennai to encourage export of handicrafts."We are still lagging behind China in the export of handicrafts," said A.R.Chaudhuri, Regional Director, Southern Region, Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts). The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

It's Saarang time in Chennai

The five-day annual cultural festival of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras 'Saarang 2009' is all set to kickstart. Coinciding with the institute's 50th anniversary, the cultural festival would witness the first ever performance of Swedish heavy metal band Opeth.

According to V G Idichandy, Students-Dean and Saarang 2009 Steering Committee Chairman, 50 competitive events had been organised as part of the golden jubilee celebration and the event would witness over 50,000 people he said, a 'theatre fest' featuring theatre groups from Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai would also be conducted.The theatre fest would show three plays - '30 Days in September' by Primetime Theater Company, 'Keats Was a Tuber' by Bangalore-based journalist Ashish Sen and 'And Now for Something Completely Different' by Evam Entertainment - he said.

Fifty violinists ensembling on the open air theatre, featuring noted violinist Kanyakumari, along with danceuse Shobhana's dance drama titled 'Maya Ravan' would be the attraction on the inaugural day. One of the regular events 'Saarang Village' would be different this year, as it would showcase the folk arts of all four Southern states.Since large number of people were expected, security had been tightened at the venue. 'Mozart of Madras' takes on the world

The Tamil film fraternity is celebrating A R Rahman's nominations to the Oscars with so much joy and pride.

That he belongs to Bollywood as well, or got nominated for the Academy Awards for an English film, is no reason to not be bashful.

The 'Mozart of Madras' might have courted fame with international collaborations, Bollywood flicks and solos, but Chennai has welcomed him with arms wide open every time he returned with a Tamil cinema, commanding a grip over Chennaiites like no other musician has.

Slumdog Millionaire, a film with a relatively unknown cast, by a filmmaker who still remains obscure to many, has stepped in to the limelight, thanks to Rahman's musical score. The movie, already available on DVD, and the music selling like hot cakes, are ample proof for it. And his Oscar nomination, 16 years after he first took on his magical keyboard to play Chinna Chinna Aasai, gives the entire industry reason to celebrate.

Actor Madhavan feels it a time of sheer happiness.

"We're making headlines not just as a growing economy now, but as people with creative brilliance. It augurs so well for cinema as a whole too," says the actor.

The sixteen years of incessant hard work put in by the musician, makes him the most likely candidate for an Oscar, claims lyricist Vairamuthu.

"This honour hasn't come to him overnight. It is the result of enormous toil by the youngster," he quips.

Vairamuthu, who has been a great part of Rahman's journey from his first song in Roja, thinks Rahman deserves it and is so sure that he will get it.

Blackout at Adyar, Besant Nagar

Punctured electricity cables caused a blackout in Besant Nagar here late on Friday.

Parts of Adyar were also affected and supply was restored after officials arranged power from local alternate sources.

According to TNEB officials, electricity supply to Besant Nagar and parts of Adyar such as Padmanabha Nagar and Venkateswara Nagar was hit because of damage to 33 KVA cables that brought power to the neighbourhoods from the TIDEL Park substation.

Also, cables from the Taramani Substation to Besant Nagar were damaged.

"A backhoe loader [colloquially JCB /Pocklain machines] had severely damaged cables on the Taramani-Velachery Road stretch. When we reached the spot, the driver abandoned the vehicle and ran away," an official attending to the repair work said.

The service utility that employed the backhoe loader was not known, he added.

While a team of technicians identified the pierced cables in two different locations and set to repair them, another group sourced power for the affected areas from neighbouring substations such as the IIT unit.

Two big parks to be developed in Avadi

CHENNAI: Residents of Avadi, who have been starved of recreation and entertainment, unlike their city counterparts, may soon have a few places to plan an outing as the local body proposes to develop two big parks in Paruthipattu and Modern City.

The two parks would be set up with the assistance from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA).

K. Bharathi, a resident of Kamaraj Nagar, said that a few cinema theatres functioning in Avadi were the only options for entertainment for residents there.

The few parks, smaller in size, were not sufficient for the burgeoning population, he said.

11 small parks
Officials of Avadi Municipality said the local body maintained 11 small parks in various localities.

"We decided to give more attention to the idea of developing parks to increase the green cover and also provide entertainment options to people," an official said.

Nearly Rs.1 crore has been allocated towards park development this year.

CBED programme
Avadi Municipal Commissioner S. Sivasubramanian said a vacant space spread over one acre at Modern City in Pattabiram had been identified for setting up a park under the funding of Community-Based Environment Development (CBED) programme, a CMDA venture to provide facilities for the improvement of environment in local bodies.

A two-acre space has been earmarked on the Avadi-Poonamallee High Road at Paruthipattu, which would be improved as a park with various facilities.

Some of the facilities proposed to be provided include swimming pool, water fountains and walkers' path, he said.

Work is likely to commence in April or May for the four-month-long projects, Mr. Sivasubramanian added.

Officials of Avadi municipality plan to discuss the design and facilities to be provided in the proposed park with the representatives of CMDA for funding.

A CMDA official said the CBED programme was launched in 2002 to help local bodies upgrade facilities such as parks, burial grounds and stormwater drains. Several civic bodies in southern suburbs, such as Peerkankaranai and Perungulathur, have also utilised the funds to rehabilitate and beautify water.

The CBED would provide a grant to cover 80 per cent of the project cost and the local body concerned have to provide the remaining cost through its funds and public contribution.

A local monitoring committee would also be set up to implement the project, the official said.

The project cost for establishing park at Modern City is estimated to be Rs.25 lakh, the official added.

10 more flyovers, subways to come-up in Chennai

Chennai (PTI):In order to ease traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, the Tamil Nadu government plans to construct another 10 flyovers and subways across the city.

Announcing this in the State Assembly,local Administration Minister M K Stalin said the flyovers would come up at Perambur, Cenotaph Road, Rangarajapuram, Kathivakkam Highway Road, Alandur Salai, Mint Street and Vysarpadi.

Subways would also be built at Villivakkam, Royapuram Maniyakarat and Jones Road at Saidapet, Stalin said.

Apart from this, a vehicular subway would be built at a cost of Rs 4 crore at Bhojaraja Railway junction near Korukkupet at a cost of Rs 6.28 crore.

Steps were being taken to widen the Perambur Locomotive Works flyover at Rs 9.50 crore, he added.
