A ragpicker boy was the centre of attention during the recent serial blasts that shook the capital. Days after the terror strikes, a leading cinema house has launched an initiative to formalise education for ragpickers like him along with other street children who often lead a life of struggle and despair trying to make out a living through activities ranging from begging, ragpicking or vending.

Two bombs were diffused in the capital after a ragpicker and a street vendor spotted them and informed security agencies on time on September 13.

"These children are key to a developed nation. And please don't call them street children and better subject them as children of hope or children for hope. This programme instigates hope for less fortunate children," said the former president APJ Abdul Kalam on the sidelines of the launch of the programme 'PVR Street to School' held in the capital recently.

The former president, known for his love for children, cited famous lines from one of his books, "Knowledge brings with it the ability to imagine, which in turn brings in new thoughts. The circle continues when these new thoughts provoke new ideas and knowledge and that is what leads to a great nation." The former president spoke mostly in Hindi. "You dream of big things and work sincerely, you will achieve them," he said.

While launching the initiative to fromalise education for street children, Dr Kalam conferred awards and also motivated them with his story telling art in a packed house, occupied mostly by street children. - Agencies
