Scary really but you need to know why this happens and be able to do something about it. Most resumes end up in the trash due to poor presentation, content and writing style, usually combined with a total disregard for what the prospective employer is looking for. This is where the covering letter comes in.

The cover letter is your secret weapon to get you that job. Did you know that the covering letter is considered by employers more important than the resume itself and more than 50% of job hunters fail to send in a cover letter with their resume.

Now as stupid as that sounds its actually good news for me an you because we can produce an amazing looking resume and a razor sharp covering letter and be one step ahead of the competition. Getting your covering letter right is absolutely crucial to make a good first impression and getting your resume to the top of the pile. Each covering letter you send should be different and tailored specifically towards the company you are applying too.

A few points you may want to consider when preparing your cover letter.

1, Research, good research is essential. You must learn about your prospective employers business. Make good use of trade magazines, newspapers and other resources.

2, Design, the design of your covering letter is important, it should be visually appealing and follow an attractive format.

3, Study,
you must study carefully the role to which you are applying and have a good understanding in what is involved.

4, Skills, demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm and show that your skills would benefit their company.

5, Information, show enough information on the covering letter to encourage recruiters to want to learn more about you.
