"Students must spread environmental awareness"

Seminar on 'Protection and preservation of natural resources'

THANJAVUR: Students can play a major role in creating awareness among people about maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity said G. Nammalvar, organic farming expert, here on Tuesday.

Speaking at a seminar on 'Protection and preservation of natural resources' organised by the Department of Archaeology at Tamil University here, Mr. Nammalvar said that global warming and food security were the two challenges faced by us as stated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the G8 summit.

Global warming was the result of heavy industrialisation in developed countries. Each person could contribute in a humble way to minimising global warming and ensuring food security, Mr. Nammalvar said.

Tree cover was an important factor for getting rain. Depletion of tree cover had affected the rainfall.

Satellite datas reveal that tree cover has been fast depleting in India.

There should be 33 per cent of tree cover to maintain ecological balance in India. But now there was only 11 per cent, Mr. Nammalvar claimed.

Depletion of tree cover in Western Ghats resulted in monsoon failure. Mangroves of Muthupettai lagoon in Tiruvarur district helped in minimising the tsunami impact. In fact there was no tsunami in the lagoon area.

Ecology was nothing but an interaction between living and non-living objects. Our relation to nature should be like that of a mother and child. Biodiversity was yet another important factor. It should be maintained to ensure ecological balance.

Food chain also should not be disturbed. Use of chemical fertilisers should be avoided and organic farming was the only way to live healthy.

M. Rajendran,Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University, said that paperless e-governance was one way of minimising damage to trees which were cut for producing paper.

He pointed out that Tamil University has gone for e-governance. "We should pay back nature what we have taken from it," he said.

G. Deivanayagam, Dean of Science, Tamil University, also spoke.
