Test Center Procedures and Regulations (CBT)

There are certain rules and regulations that must be followed by you:

    * Admission to the Test Center (CBT): Report to the test center at least 30 minutes before your
       scheduled arrival time for check-in procedures. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted and your
       fee will not be refunded.
    * Bring your official photo bearing identification. Your identification will be checked before you are
       admitted.
    * The name given when making your appointment must match the name on the identification document
       you present at the test center.
    * Bring your appointment confirmation number. This will be given to you when you schedule your
      appointment.
    * Bring your CBT voucher, if you have one.
    * You will be required to write (not print) and sign a confidentiality statement. If you do not complete
       and sign the statement, you cannot test and your fee will not be refunded.
    * You will be required to sign the test center log before and after the test session and any time you
       leave or enter the testing room.
    * Be prepared to select the institutions to which you would like your scores sent.

General Guidelines

Dress so that you can adapt to any room temperature. Friends or relatives who accompany you to the test center are not allowed to wait in the test center or be in contact with you while you take the test. Except for ETS-authorized observers, visitors are not allowed in the testing room white testing is in progress.

Verifying Your ID

You must present valid and acceptable identification documents. Identification verification at the test center may also include

    * Thumb printing

    * Other forms of electronic ID confirmation.

If you refuse to participate, you will not be permitted to test and you will forfeit your test fee.

Personal items other than ID are not allowed in the testing room. Before the test, you will be assigned a locker or receive instructions from test center staff regarding where you must deposit personal items. You will not have access to your personal items during the test or break. Cell phones are not permitted in the test room. Test centers assume no responsibility for candidates' personal belongings.

Seating

The test administrator/supervisor will assign you a seat. Your picture will be taken and will be reproduced at your testing station. Be sure the correct photograph is displayed on your assigned testing station.

Delayed or Rescheduled Tests

Weather conditions or other circumstances beyond the test administrator or ETS's control may require a delayed start or the rescheduling of your test appointment. If your test session is canceled or if it is later determined that your scores could not be reported, you can

    * Retest free of charge
    * Receive a full refund of the original test fee
    * Seek reimbursement from ETS for reasonable and documented expenses (for yourself only) associated with traveling to the test center.

    * Date of birth
    * Mailing address
    * Daytime telephone number

Completing the Tutorial

    * The purpose of the tutorial and/or other un-timed sections prior to the test is to become familiar with the computer functions and other important information that will make your computer-based test experience as convenient as possible.
    * The maximum time allotted for the tutorial and/or other un-timed sections prior to the test is 30 minutes.
    * Time spent on the tutorial and/or other un-timed sections should not be used for any other purpose.
    * You may not use scratch paper during this time.
    * Infractions will be reported to ETS, and the test administrator is authorized to dismiss you from the testing administration if you fail to follow the test administrator's directions.

Writing Your Essay

    * You must compose an essay, and if you choose to handwrite it, you must write it on the TOEFL CBT
       Handwritten Essay Form. If you write on anything but the form, your essay will not be scored. Time
       will not start until you have received your essay form.
    * Do not click on "Next" and "Confirm" until you have finished typing or writing your essay.
    * Scratch paper is provided following the break to aid you in organizing your essay. Scratch paper and
      note taking are not permitted during the Listening and Structure sections.
    * If you handwrite your essay, writing material will be provided. (Pencils will be provided at the test
       center.) Once the time has ended for the essay section, you must stop writing and hand in your
       essay. All scratch paper must be returned to the test center administrator.

Taking a Break, Leaving Your Seat, or Having a Problem

    * A mandatory five-minute break occurs midway through the testing session. If you take a longer
       break, you may be dismissed or your score may be canceled.
    * Raise your hand if you need to leave your seat at any time other than for the break. The timing of
       the section will not stop.
    * If you have a problem with your computer, or need the administrator for any reason during the test,
       raise your hand.
    * You may not have access to your cell phone during scheduled or unscheduled breaks.

Getting Your Scores

  You must answer at least one question in each section and write an essay to receive an official score report. Immediately after the test, you will see your scores for Listening and Reading. Your Structure/Writing and total scores will be shown to you as score ranges because your essay will not yet have been read and rated. After viewing your scores on screen, you may choose up to four institutions or agencies to receive your scores at no extra charge. The computer will prompt you through this selection process.
