PEOPLE WHO WANT TO CHANGE YOUR CAREER

If you are about to make a major career change, this guide will assist you in preparing your resume.

Whatever your background is,  no matter what type of job you are seeking, your resume needs to show your skills and experience as they apply to the new position. The key to preparing this type of CV is to find what skills you have that would be valuable in the new job.

Presenting them in the right way is the key to success here.  As you list your skills, education and experience, mention the ones that are relevant to the new position first and then list the others.  Making a list of responsibilities will not work with this type of resume.  You need to show the employer that you have acquired the necessary skills to handle this position.

For example, lets say that a technical person wants to move into sales and marketing.  Although he might have never done sales before, he should mention things like "client liaison", "preparation of presentations for meetings", "understanding client needs", "ability to develop strong business relationships", "a strong technical background" and "excellent communication skills".  It would of no use writing things like "maintenance of generators", unless of course you are going to sell generator spare parts.

Your personal skills are a critical part of your resume.  They need to show that you have not only the skills, but also the right attitude.  Phrases like "self-motivated", "easily adapt to change", "interested in furthering education" should be used.

The emphasis throughout the resume should be on what you have to offer, not on what you are not qualified to do.  One of the most important sections of this resume is the career statement.  A well worded paragraph that clearly demonstrates what career path you are wishing to take is invaluable.

For example:

CAREER STATEMENT
Utilised a strong technical background and excellent communication skills in a Sales and Marketing role.  Develop strong business relationships by providing a high standard of customer service and good technical advice.  Continue to develop knowledge and expertise through further training and on-job experience.

Just remember the reasons why you feel you are capable of handling this career change and make sure that your resume reflects that.  It is up to you to show them why you are the best person for the job.
