China Mobile is the world's biggest cellular carrier with 420 million subscribers. The company which is 74 per cent owned by Chinese government is preparing to bring Apple's iPhone to China. China Mobile's network covers almost 97 per cent of China's population.

Beijing unveiled in May a sweeping industry reshuffle that saw the creation of two full-service competitors to China Mobile via mergers and acquisitions between rival Unicom and fixed-line operators China Telecom and Netcom.

Despite facing increased competition and pressure on voice margins, the company sees growth through new subscribers and value-added services such as music and news.

However, according to some analysts, China Mobile faces problems in overseeing the rollout and development of the untested, home-grown 3G technology, known as TD-SCDMA or Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access.
