China-based ZTE is the world's sixth-largest handset producer. Till five years ago, almost all ZTE equipment was sold domestically. Now more than half goes for export. The company has plants in Brazil, Sweden and US.

It recently won contracts in Pakistan to supply GSM hardware, in Portugal for fixed-line systems and in the US to supply Wimax equipment to Sprint.

Shenzhen-based ZTE will provide Emcali with core network and wireless access equipment as well as terminals and base stations for the 3.5G WiMax project.

It is China's only listed telecoms manufacturer, with shares publicly traded on both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges.

ZTE has also bagged a deal with Emcali to build Colombia's first WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) 16 network.
