Americans made history on the Super Tuesday after primaries in 22 states left the Democrats split between supporting either a woman or an African-

Hi Acumen's

American to run for president, for the first time ever in the country's history.

Hillary Clinton, despite winning the most populous state of California, got more delegates and less states. Barack Obama, meanwhile, more states than Clinton, including his own - Illinois.

Though the contest is far from over, Obama is now nipping at Hillary's heels and threatens to take over her bastion.
Hillary won 632 pledged delegates and 193 super-delegates taking her total to 825 while Obama won 626 pledged delegates and 106 super-delegates. His total was 732. However, neither is anywhere near the magic number of 2,025 delegates.

As for the Republicans, John McCain won the big state of California, his home state of Arizona and surged ahead in the delegates count. Mike Huckabee made a surprise comeback in five states while Mitt Romney kept Massachusetts. Neither Romney nor Huckabee are throwing in the towel, though.

McCain won 598 pledged delegates and 17 unpledged delegates, taking his total to 615, Romney won 259 pledged delegates and 9 unpledged, totalling 268 while Huckabee won 169, with 166 pledged and 3 unpledged delegates. The Republicans must reach a total of 1,191 delegates.

While McCain has more of less cemented his position, a clear Democrat winner may have to wait. The next stops are Louisiana and Washington, on Saturday but the bigger prizes are Ohio and Texas, which will hold their primaries on March 4.While the Republican race has a simple winner-takes-all system, the Democrat race is complicated by a proportional representation system. Both sides are now claiming victory.

At this stage, Obama appears to have the edge with preliminary exit polls showing him encroaching on Hillary's voting base. She had only a slight edge among women and whites while Obama is leading among the men, including white men.A point in Hillary’s favour is that her support base among the Hispanics is believed to be very strong. Yet pollsters say the road ahead for Obama looks favourable.
