The 'Swarnajayanti Fellowship' for young scientists was instituted by the Indian National Science Academy to give budding scientists the impetus and the encouragement to carry out further studies and advanced research work in the field of science and technology.The Department of Science and Technology (DST) was set up in May 1971 with the intention of exploring the uncharted territories in the field of science and technology.


The DST plays a pivotal role in the overall development of science and technology in the country. The Swarnajayanti Fellowship Scheme was conceived by the Government of India through the Indian National Science Academy in 1997, the year in which India celebrated its fiftieth year of independence. This scheme provides financial assistance to an elite group of young scientists to carry out fundamental research work in the challenging areas of science and technology.

Eligibility Criteria for Swarnajayanti Fellowship for young Scientists of Indian National Science Academy:

The following are the eligibility criteria under the Swarnajayanti Fellowship Scheme:

    * Candidates should have a Ph.D.in Science or Engineering or a post graduation in Engineering or Technology or a MD in medicine
    * Should be carrying out research work in a nascent subject of science or technology and should have published research papers
    * Indian nationals, resident in India or outside India can apply for the Swarnajayanti Fellowship
    * Candidates have the option of being employed in any science and technology institute in India
    * Candidates should be in the 30-40 years age bracket

Duration of Scholarships :

The period of the Swarnajayanti Fellowship will be for a maximum period of 5 years and will not be extended under any circumstance.

Value of Scholarship:

    * A fellowship grant of Rs.25, 000 per month for a period of 5 years for those candidates who are not in regular employment
    * The fellowship grant is reduced to Rs.10,000/- per month for candidates who are in regular employment
    * Financial assistance in the form of grants for equipments, travel and communication are also given
