VELLORE: Raj B. Singh, Chief Pulmonary Physician from Apollo Hospital, Chennai, awarded Diploma in Allergy and Asthma to 18 doctors from different States at the graduation ceremony for the diploma course held at Christian Medical College (CMC) here recently.

The CMC is a pioneer in offering the country's first postgraduate training in allergy and asthma to selected, highly motivated specialists from all over India, in collaboration with International Asthma Services (IAS), a non-profit educational organisation from Colorado, U.S.

Distance learning mode
The Diploma in Allergy and Asthma is a year-long distance learning course with quarterly week-long personal contact sessions.Dr. Singh urged the outgoing trainees to rise up to the occasion and meet the growing need in the field of allergy and the emerging challenges in the evolution of the practice of medicine.N. Madhu Bashani, one of the trainees from Chennai, was awarded Dr. Henry Claman Gold Medal for overall proficiency and T.J. Vadivukkarasi, doctor from Cuddalore, was awarded a prize for securing the second position.

Be compassionate
D.J. Christopher, Head of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, CMC, and co-director of the programme, called upon the new graduates to be ethical, knowledgeable, compassionate and humane in their approach to their patients. P.K. Vedanthan, Chairman, IAS, spoke about the highlights of the programme.
