Udhagamandalam: Many post-graduate students of the Botany Department of the Government Arts College are now more knowledgeable about organic farming, thanks to an orientation programme dealing with Organic and Biodynamic agriculture organised by the Earth Trust here on Thursday. Over 40 students and two teachers attended the programme. They were familiarised with the principles and practices of organic farming, soil binding, crop rotation and mixed cropping, composting and preparation of growth hormone.

Addressing the students, the Education Manager, The Earth Trust, Mohankumar, said that organic agriculture followed the laws of nature. Pointing out that the increasing and indiscriminate use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides were seriously affecting the health of the soil in the Nilgiris, he said that studies have shown that water bodies, biodiversity and the health of the people had suffered. Pesticide residues in drinking water and food have become a major source of concern.

The Education Programmer, K.M. Sivakumar, hoped that such programmes would galvanise the younger generation to take action to stem the harmful trend.
