As the FCC prepares to rule on how to best use the "white space" spectrum, Google has launched a campaign to to bring public awareness to the issue.

Google hopes Free the Airwaves will help it gain some traction around the use of white spaces. But GigaOm blogger Om Malik doubts the advocacy campaign is really for anyone else's benefit other than Google's.

Google and other backers of the white space idea have faced opposition from groups like The Grand Ole Opry and the National Association of Broadcasters, who say using the spaces will interfere with broadcast signals.
