GUNTUR: Organising a mass eye screening camp for all police personnel in Guntur on Sunday and holding a walk from Sankar Eye Hospital to NRI General Hospital for Eye Protection on Monday evening, would mark the launching of the World Sight Week.

In a release here on Friday, the Sankar Eye Hospital said that the 75 per cent of the blindness was curable. To prevent the curable blindness in the world every second Thursday of October is celebrated as "World Sight Day" and this year it was on October 9. A special wing for those who did not proper eyesight would be opened on the Sankara Eye Hospital on Tuesday and on the same day an awareness seminar would be organised for VVIT Engineering College students.

On Wednesday Holy Family School children would be screened and on Thursday SKCV Orphanage children at Vijayawada would be screened for sight defects. Approximately 314 million people suffer serious vision impairment, of these, 45 million people were blind and 124 million had low vision.The hospital said 153 million people's vision impairment was due to uncorrected refractive errors

ADILABAD: The District Medical and Health Department will conduct seven eye disease screening camps at various places in the district in connection with the World Sight Day 2008 that was celebrated on Thursday.

The theme os the current event is "Eye on the future-fighting visual impairment in later life. Adilabad DMHO D. Babu and District Programme Manager of the District Blindness Control Society (DBCS) said after screening eligible patients will be supplied freely with a pair of glasses.The camps will be held at Area Hospital, Mancherial on October 14, at Community Hospitals Bellampalli and Nirmal on October 15, at CHC Asifabad and Area Hospital, Bhanisa on October 22 at Jainoor PHC on October 24 and at RIMS, Adilabad on October 31.

765 schoolchildren of Andhra Pradesh Residential School (APRS) screened Women staff of Visakh Refinery donated Rs. 25,000 for the cause

VISAKHAPATNAM: A comprehensive eye care camp was conducted for 765 schoolchildren of Andhra Pradesh Residential School (APRS) at Adavivaram near Simhachalam on Saturday.The camp was sponsored by Dhatri, VR Women Force, HPCL, Visakha Refinery and the screening was conducted by Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital.

In charge Principal V. Jala Durga Sesha Kumari , who presided over the function organised on the occasion, thanked Dhatri, VR Women Force-HPCL-Visakha Refinery for the gesture.At the inauguration of the camp Visakh Refinery General Manager (Finance) M. Naveen Kumar appreciated the gesture of the women staff of the refinery for donating Rs.25,000 to help the school children. Refinery Senior Manager (Projects) B. Mary Sujatha explained the activities of Dhatri.

Eye check-up camp from November 26

Madikeri: The annual free eye check-up and surgery camp will be held at the Ashwini Hospital here from November 26 to December 1, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat A.S. Ramachandrappa said here on Tuesday.

He said that the camp was being held to mark the 32nd anniversary of the hospital. Dr. Sudhakar from Madikeri will be in-charge of the camp. Dr. Shivaprasad from Hassan, Dr. Chandrashekar and Dr. Sridhar from Bangalore will conduct surgeries from November 27 to 30.

Rotary Club of Visakhapatnam will hold a free eye check up camp at Indian Oil Swagat Retail Outlet on the National Highway (NH-5) at Anakapalle on Sunday.

The camp, being held in association with Indian Oil Corporation, is intended for the benefit of autorickshaw, taxi and truck drivers, according to club president Mayank Kumari Deo. Free medicines would be distributed at the camp.

Eye donation

KRISHNAGIRI:
Following the advice of the president of Lions Club of Hosur Sipcot Dhanasekakaran, the sons of a woman donated the eyes of their mother who died recently.

Jaya Prakash Jain and Om Prakash Jain donated the eyes of their mother Dhanalakshmi Ammal, who died recently.

A team of doctors from Narayana Nethralaya received the eyes and said that it will be donated to two persons within 48 hours. Due to the steps taken by the Lions Club of Hosur Sipcot, so far 10 people have got vision, says a release from the Club.

MADURAI: A special eye screening programme was conducted for Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation employees on Thursday and Friday by Vasan Eye Care Hospital.

Around 900 employees took part, of whom 35 were advised to undergo cataract surgery. More than 40 persons were given spectacles.

Eye care institute launched

NELLORE: Vasan Healthcare Group, operating more than 30 hospitals across South India, has launched an eye care institute at Brindavanam in Nellore city on Monday.

Vasan eye care which was running hospitals in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh is planning to launch 50 more hospitals in the country and overseas by 2009, said institution director (Strategic Planning and Growth) P.A. Unni at a press conference here. The new hospital will provide free consultation for senior citizens and students below 21 years. A strong team with specialist doctors including P. Advances in eye care discussed

COIMBATORE: Advances in the treatment of cataract, management of glaucoma and eye defects in children were some of the areas in eye care that were discussed at a recent two-day national meet, "Eyetrendz'08", conducted by Lotus Eye Care Hospital here.Inaugurating the meet, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. Thiruvasagam stressed the importance of technology in improving various areas of medical science. Innovations in ophthalmology should be used properly to treat blindness, he said. MADURAI: An eye bank established at Government Rajaji Hospital here in association with Lions Clubs International will be inaugurated on Saturday. This facility is the first of its kind among Government hospitals in the southern region.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, P. Thiagarajan, Medical Director, Eye Bank, and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, said that 20 lakh people had been affected by corneal blindness, and if provided cornea in time, many of them could get back their vision.

This initiative was a joint effort with the Lions Clubs International, which donated Rs. 3 lakh, and the State Government's Namakku Naame Thittam provided Rs. 6 lakh. These funds had been used to procure medical equipment. Other infrastructure would be acquired in a phased manner, he said.

Similar eye banks had been planned at Government hospitals in Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Coimbatore. Madurai Aravind Eye Hospital provided the expertise — from training the medical staff and handling equipment such as specular microscopy.

The cornea had to be removed within four hours of the donor's death, he said. On the death of a person, the family members must inform the nearest eye bank so that the cornea could be collected.

Over 60 children were screened for basic abnormalities in vision at a screening programme for children organised by Navy Wives Welfare Association (Eastern Region) on Monday at Balwadi, a school for underprivileged children run by NWWA. Over 5,000 screened at free eye camp

KANCHEePURAM: Cataract surgery was performed on 1,433 people during a three-day free eye camp held at Adhiprasakthi Hospital and Research Institute, Melmaruvathur, from Saturday. It was organised by the Melmaruvathur Siddhar Peetam.

More than 5,000 people from villages located around Melmaruvathur were screened for eye ailments.

A team of ophthalmologists headed by Madhivanan Natarajan and Shalini performed intraocular lens (IOL) implantation surgery on 1,422 people.

Bangaru Adigalar distributed free spectacles to 785 persons at the valedictory function on Monday, a press release from the Peetam said.

Free eye surgery 

BANGALORE: The Rotary Club of Sadashivanagar is offering to carry out 1,939 cataract surgeries with IOL (intra-ocular lenses) fitment free for the poor.

This project is a joint effort of the club along with Rotary Ferne-Voltaire from France, Rotary Ghent, Belgium, and The Rotary Foundation, Evanston, USA.

The club, with the available funds, is in a position to assist those affected with cataract. Four base hospitals will conduct regular eye camps in and around Bangalore and its outlying areas to identify the beneficiaries, who would be directed to the selected base hospitals for cataract surgeries with IOL fitments.

Eye screening camp organised for women

CHENNAI: "Non Governmental Organisations play a crucial role in empowering women and there has been an improvement in the standard of living of women," said former bureaucrat C.K. Gariyali on Sunday.

While complementing the sustained efforts of the Working Women's Forum (India) in bringing about a change in women's standard of living, she said that street fights resulting in abusing of women have also come down considerably.

Ms. Gariyali inaugurated an eye screening camp organised by the forum in association with Rajan Eye Care Hospital and Rotary Club of Madras T. Nagar for grass-root women workers. The camp had over 300 women workers participating. Among them 30 patients were referred for cataract surgery and 103 were advised to wear spectacles, which would be provided by the hospital free of cost.

While speaking at the function, Rajan Eye Care Hospital Medical Director Mohan Rajan said that 'Privilege Cards' would be issued to the members of the forum to enable them to get free eye screening and eye operations at any of their hospital branches in the city. He lauded Jaya Arunachalam, president of the forum, for her efforts.

Ms. Arunachalam said that the forum was committed to empowering women in extreme poverty by providing an opportunity to shine in life.

KHAMMAM: The Goutami Eye Institute, Rajahmundry, will organise a paediatric eye camp at Ricob Bazar School in the town on April 26, according to K. Madhu, executive director of the institute.

Addressing a news conference here, he said the prevalence of childhood blindness was high in the State. Four to five per cent of cases of vision loss in the world owed to childhood blindness. The hospital has taken an initiative to control child blindness.

The camp is to detect common problems in senior citizens such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and low vision are the eye problems. A press release from the hospital said cataract was the clouding of the natural lens that caused misty vision.

It could be cured only with surgery. Glaucoma was caused by a rise in fluid pressure in the eye, causing progressive damage to the retina and optic nerve. Patients would become permanently blind if the problem was not detected early and treated.
