3,000 Students Given Scholarship :agree

Udupi:
Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University K.M. Kaveriappa said on Sunday that while it was fashionable to talk about the economic growth of the country, the problems of poor people should not be pushed under the carpet. He was speaking at a function organised by G. Shankar Family Trust to distribute scholarships to 3,000 poor students, and financial assistance to the needy Yakshagana artistes, here.

Prof. Kaveriappa said that although the country's economy was growing at around nine per cent a year, the fact remained that India was in 128th place in human development index (HDI), as per the Human Development Report of the United Nations Development Programme. This meant that the country had a lot of work to do for uplift of weaker sections of society.

"It is essential to improve the HDI of the country", he said. As far as education was concerned, there was a misconception that the students coming from the rural and backward areas were not intelligent. With proper encouragement, they too could make their mark in life and surpass their urban counterparts, Prof. Kaveriappa said.

President of Alva's Education Foundation, Moodabidri, Mohan Alva, presided over the function. President of the trust G. Shankar delivered introductory remarks.Yakshagana artistes such as Udyavar Sanjeeva Chouta, Chipparu Sanjeeva Ballal, Shivaram Jogi, Pollali Lokkayya, Sadananda Prabhu Elagi, Gavali Sheena Kulal, Halagadde Gajanana Bhandary, Aluru Surendra, Padukone Surendra, Mugabettu Shankar Nayak, and M.
