Kubernetes is an open-source platform designed to automate deploying, scaling, and operating application containers. Originally developed by Google, it is now maintained by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

Key features of Kubernetes include:
  • Automated Deployment: Kubernetes simplifies the process of deploying applications. You can describe the desired state of your applications and Kubernetes will ensure that the current state matches the desired state.
  • Scaling and Load Balancing: Kubernetes can automatically scale applications up and down based on demand. It can distribute network traffic to ensure that applications are stable and responsive.
  • Self-Healing: Kubernetes monitors the health of applications and can automatically restart or replace containers that fail or become unresponsive.
  • Service Discovery and Load Balancing: Kubernetes can expose a container using the DNS name or its own IP address. If traffic to a container is high, Kubernetes can load balance and distribute the network traffic so that the deployment is stable.
  • Storage Orchestration: Kubernetes allows you to automatically mount the storage system of your choice, whether from local storage, a public cloud provider, or a network storage system.
  • Secret and Configuration Management: Kubernetes can manage sensitive information, such as passwords, OAuth tokens, and SSH keys. You can deploy and update secrets and application configuration without rebuilding your image and without exposing secrets in your stack configuration.

Overall, Kubernetes provides a robust platform for running and managing containerized applications, making it easier to handle complex deployments, scaling, and operations in a cloud-native environment.
