Similarly, Plan 225 has been made a pay-by-second one. "Low-end subscribers have been given more options, including making short duration calls," he said. BSNL to roll out FTTH facility

CHENNAI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has decided to roll out FTTH   facility that offers a higher bandwidth for data transfer, its Chairman and Managing Director Kuldeep Goyal said here on Monday.

He was speaking on the sidelines of a function organised to mark the issue of 10,000th 3G mobile connection in the city. In the first phase, a total of 100 cities in the country would be equipped with FTTH and the rest would be covered in subsequent phases. BSNL's recently launched Wi-MAX broadband services would cover 1,000 block headquarters across the country in the first phase by the end of 2010.

In an attempt to tackle stiff competition from private service providers, BSNL is strengthening its marketing and service departments. It is designating 10,000 people for the departments, he said.

On the growing demand for 3G services, Mr. Goyal said BSNL had set a target of providing 10 lakh connections by March-end across the country. It would cover a total of 740 cities, including Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi and Salem, in the State. "We are also looking at offering better connectivity in every city to ensure customer satisfaction. As our 3G infrastructure can take 50 lakh more connections, we are focussing on the marketing part." BSNL has invested Rs.2,600 crore for 3G services.

Mr. Goyal said that video-calling technology would emerge in a big way and voice calls would be available for free in future. Agreeing that the response for IPTV service was lukewarm, Mr.Goyal said efforts were on to promote the facility.

He felicitated Lalitha Jewellery Mart Private Limited managing director M.Kiran Kumar, the 10,000th customer of 3G services in Chennai. The 3G mobile services offer speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps, and has video calling and mobile TV as value additions.

BSNL's tracking takes autorickshaws fleet management to next level                                                                                                                                                    N. Anand                                                                                                                                                                          CHENNAI: With a view to provide hassle-free ride to the commuters in the city and to have better fleet management system in place, Chennai Call Auto Pvt. Ltd has taken the help of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to track its members on real-time basis. For the last two months, Chennai Call Auto has been tracking 50 autorickshaws through its 'Man Tracker' software from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Only those autorickshaw drivers who have a clean record and are willing to use meters are taken as members. There is no joining fee, but the members have to share 10 per cent of their revenue.
Following the success, the company has decided to enlarge its operations and approached the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) officials to add the 147 tourist-friendly autorickshaws to its network.
"Everyone has been provided with a BSNL SIM card. The SIM card will provide the location signal of the nearby tower to our call centre. The information will be updated every five minutes. Besides, providing the exact location of the autorickshaws, the software provides additional details such as driver's name, date and time of the location on real-time and for 24 hours. On receiving the call from the customer, we will inform the autorickshaw driver at the nearest point to pick-up the customer," K. Navaneethan, Managing Director, Chennai Call Auto told The Hindu.
The company uses GSM technology instead of GPS due to the cost factor. It is also being offered to two air-conditioning companies to keep track of its salesmen.
"We are the first private company to be offered the (tracking system) database by BSNL. Every month, we are paying over Rs.450 per user to BSNL and this will come down with the growth in the numbers. Our drivers are in the Closed User Group and hence their monthly rental will be less," he added.
Currently, the call centre has seven employees and this will be scaled up to 50 in a month's time. The call centre number is 4344 4344.

BSNL employees take casual leave en masse

Tirupur: As many as 228 employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, attached to 30 telephone exchanges in Tirupur division, went on an en masse casual leave on Friday to protest against the proposed move to implement Sam Pitroda panel's report favouring 30 percent disinvestment, among other suggestions.
Dharna
The agitating employees, including executive and non-executive cadre officials, also staged a dharna on the BSNL office premises in the city.
Disinvestment
The various BSNL employees' unions came together to state that the disinvestment of 30 percent stake of the government in the BSNL would be detrimental to both the organisation as well as the employees.
Voluntary retirement
Similarly, Pitroda panel's suggestion for downsizing the workforce by forcing one lakh employees to go on voluntary retirement was termed by the employees' unions as "anti-employee" and "anti-BSNL" moves.
"There is no need of asking the people to opt for voluntary retirement since 10,000 employees are retiring every year and no fresh recruitment taking place to fill the gaps arisen," the staff pointed out.
Another proposal of Mr. Pitroda that came under severe criticism of the employees was the move to divide BSNL into four business units in the pretext of restructuring the organisation.
According to Pitroda panel, separate business units should be created for fixed access, mobility, enterprise and new businesses.

BSNL IPTV regional bouquet gets better

CHENNAI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will look to roll out Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services more aggressively across major cities in the State with most channels on the Sun Network set to join the IPTV bouquet from April.

BSNL's IPTV services had gone commercial with about 140 channels in October in Chennai, and later in Puducherry and Coimbatore, without the major Sun channels on offer. IPTV, which offers several interactive features such as movie-on-demand, was launched in partnership with MyWay services of the Smart TV Group.

"We have planned a major expansion campaign after we host most Tamil, Telugu and Kannada channels on the Sun Network," a MyWay official said.

IPTV will now feature 16 regional channels of the Network.

However, for IPTV users this could cut both ways. While they will have access to richer regional content, the pricing of the packages could be tweaked shortly.

The next phase of the IPTV rollout in Tamil Nadu will cover Madurai and Coimbatore. "We had to delay the rollout in these cities as we needed to enlarge the bouquet of Tamil content", the official said.

BSNL sources say that one of the reasons for the below-par performance of the IPTV segment had been the insufficient Tamil content. In the five months since it migrated to the billed platform, the IPTV subscriber base has only grown to about 1,500.

"We're now looking to raise the subscriber base to over 7,000 and have planned a major campaign in the months ahead," an official said. The IPTV franchise is also expected to launch two new features soon. The "Time Shift TV" feature will enable users to catch up with any time programme that they miss on about 40 favourite channels (seven days of content is stored on a MyWay server for this). Another value-addition is the recording feature that will allow viewers to record their favourite programmes on a memory stick.

It is proposed to offer both features free for the high-end packages, sources said.
