Don't award BSNL deal to Huawei

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said that state-owned telco BSNL should not award telecom equipment contracts to Chinese equipment majors Huawei and ZTE in the interest of national security.

Both the IB and the defence ministry's reactions are in the wake of BSNL's move to shortlist Huawei (along with Swedish equipment major Ericsson) for its mega 93-million-line GSM expansion project worth around Rs 30,000 crore. This is the single largest telecom contract in the world. Ericsson was short-listed as the lowest bidder for North and East zones of India while Huawei was selected for West, East and South zones.

The views of the IB and the defence ministry were conveyed to BSNL in a meeting with the telco on April 9. In fact, during the meet, both BSNL and the Department of Telecom (DoT) suggested that Huawei could be awarded the contract in south India since the region did not share sensitive borders with countries such as Pakistan, China and Bangladesh. Besides, DoT further argued, Huawei was already working with BSNL in south India.

As per the minutes of this meeting, a copy of which is available with ET. The IB added that the BSNL should not award contracts to Chinese companies, as these companies are known to have links with the Chinese state and security apparatus.

The devices will be offered on either one time purchase basis or on monthly rental basis.

Given such projects, SIS is planning to raise funds in the region of Rs 50 crore to Rs 100 crore through venture capital or private equity in the near future.

BSNL needs to reduce frequency

VIZIANAGARAM: Botcha Jhansi Lakshmi, Lok Sabha member, has emphasised the need to adhere to World Health Organisation's suggestion on reducing frequency by erecting more number of base terminal stations where necessary for the safety of mobile users.

Participating as co-chairperson in the 5th Telephone Advisory Committee meeting of BSNL, on Saturday, Ms. Jhansi Lakshmi said that the increased frequency would have an adverse impact on ear and brain and the point was discussed in Parliament too. Hence, maintaining low frequency would not harm mobile users and also the environment. Lauding BSNL for keeping Vizianagaram district as one among the top connectivity providers in the State, the MP said that communication network still required improvement because some remote areas were still cut off.

She assured K. Neelayya, General Manager of Vizianagaram Telecom District of all help for erecting towers.

Mr. Neelayya claimed that disconnections of fixed line connections, in spite of increasing use of mobile phones, were not more than 10 per cent during the last three years. Out of 1,455 villages in the district, only 130 remote and inaccessible villages could not be linked.

However, efforts were being made to bring them under connectivity map either through GSM phones or WLL phones in the next one or two years. He said that 85 more base terminal stations would be set up by March next.

That apart, 12 more rural WiMAX terminal stations would be opened at Bobbili, Denkada, Gantyada, Garividi, Garugubilli, Kurupam, L Kota, Makkuva, Parvathiupuram, Salur, S.Kota and Therlam to improve wireless broadband services.

BSNL to test Blackberry, Wimax in BHEL township

TIRUCHI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has plans to test its new products like Blackberry service, Wimax (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) and mobile broadband services in the BHEL township shortly.

The township will have a new telephone exchange and the existing one is poised for modernisation, Principal General Manager of BSNL, Tiruchi Secondary Switching Area, A. Balraj, said on Monday.

Mr. Balraj was speaking at a function organised by BSNL for commissioning its Cellular Base Transceiver Stations at Nehru Nagar and Kamarajapuram on the BHEL premises here.

Commissioning the facility, BHEL Executive Director A.V. Krishnan observed that video conferencing through hi-tech communication gadgets would obviate the need for air travel in the coming days.

The tie-up between BHEL and BSNL was in the direction of mutual progress, he said.

The Base Transceiver Stations have been a long-felt need of the BHEL since the signals were weak in a part of the complex that included the locations of Welding Research Institute and Combined Cycle Demonstration Plant.

General Manager, Maintenance and Services, Civil and Safety Management, P. Nainar, who spoke on the occasion, commended the BSNL for providing 'closed user group' connection for employees in BHEL's Tiruchi Complex and for facilitating broad-band Internet access in the township through auto phones to benefit the student community.
