Apple's Surprise iPhone 12 Upgrade Suddenly Confirmed

Leaks around the iPhone 12 range have not been encouraging recently, but what is arguably the new phone's most eye-opening upgrade has just been confirmed.

The new iPhone 12 range will come with a large, circular array of magnets inside. Following multiple hardware leaks, 9to5Mac has confirmed the final piece of the puzzle (Why are they there?), after the site attained a video showing the prototype of a new Apple magnetic wireless charger.

The device in the video is stereotypically Apple: a minimalist white circle with charging coil and connector on the back. Furthermore, 9to5Mac notes that when comparing the charger to leaked schematics of the iPhone 12 range's circle of magnets, "The dimensions of the charging module pictured in today's video seems to line-up."

Moreover, these magnets are expected to do more than just aid accurate placement on a charging mat. They are also understood to herald the arrival of a new array of magnetic accessories, such as car mounts. Sales of magnetic wireless chargers and accessories should be given a big 'helping hand' by Apple this year, with the company removing the standard wired charger from iPhone boxes.

And expect a lot of choice. 9to5Mac says the prototype may be an Apple "development unit that the company will provide to third-party accessory makers similar to what it does with the Apple Watch charger and other parts through its MFi program." Which means, whatever design Apple settles upon, you can expect official magnetic wireless chargers of all shapes and sizes to hit the market soon after the iPhone 12 range's (increasingly mysterious) release

The addition of magnets is also a welcome addition to an iPhone 12 range which is seemingly becoming less ambitious the more we learn. Front and center are serious battery life concerns, which means the performance of the phones' ambitious new charging system may just be the more important upgrade inside them. Especially with Apple tipped to launch a port-less iPhone in 2021
