2 female officers on a naval warship for the first time in Indian history

In a bid to redefine gender equality in the Indian Navy, Sub-Lieutenant Kumudini Tiyagi and Sub-Lieutenant Rithi Singh have been appointed as the first female officers to be deployed on naval warships as part of the ship's crew.

Although the Indian Navy has deployed female officers in many of its divisions, women have not yet been assigned to warships for a number of reasons. They have not yet been appointed due to facilities including lack of privacy and availability of gender based bathrooms.

The two female officers assigned are expected to fly in the Navy's new MH-60R helicopters,

The MH-60R is designed to detect enemy ships and submarines, which can be engaged using missiles and torpedoes. In 2018, then-Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman bought Lockheed-Martin-built helicopters in a deal valued at $ 2.6 billion.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has assigned a female fighter pilot to its Raphael fighter jet. Currently the Indian Navy is recruiting female officers.

These two officers are part of a team of three officers of the Indian Coast Guard.

In 2016, Lieutenant Bhavana Kant, Lieutenant Avani Chaturvedi, and Flight Lieutenant Mohana Singh became India's first women fighter pilots. At the moment, 1,875 women are in service, including 10 fighter pilots. Eighteen female officers are navigators.
