Coronavirus pandemic: The central government has decided to allow domestic flights to operate from next week, even though the number of Covid-19 cases continues to rise and has already cross the 1 lakh-mark. Announcing these relaxations, the Centre said that domestic flights will resume operations in a calibrated manner from May 25. The move comes at a time when the Indian economy is battered and the aviation industry is struggling to survive. Meanwhile, close to 5,000 new cases have reported in India for the last 3-4 days. However, the Union health ministry has claimed that the recovery rate among those having tested positive has risen to nearly 40 per cent, from about 7 per cent before the lockdown began on March 25.

The numbers will further go up today. Swarms of locust have now started attacking standing crops in several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh as there have been no activity on the fields for months. These locusts can destroy entire fields of crops in minutes. Meanwhile, India has started easing the over 2-month-long nationwide lockdown and started operating domestic passenger flights. As the number of coronavirus cases across the world now stand at 5.49 million with 3,46,000 deaths, US biotechnology firm Novavax has said it hopes to release a proven vaccine by the end of this year.

Cyclone Nisarga LIVE tracking: After making landfall in Alibag, the severe cyclonic storm Cyclone Nisarga has started moving towards Mumbai. Alibag saw wind speed of 93 kmph. Mumbai Police has imposed prohibitory orders across Greater Mumbai in view of the cyclone while movement on the Mumbai-Worli Sea Link has also been prohibited during the cyclone. Over 1 lakh people have been evacuated in Maharashtra. The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) has deployed 20 teams in Maharashtra, including 8 in Mumbai. Gujarat has also geared up for the impact of the cyclone where NDRF has sent 15 teams of rescue personnel. Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rainfall since Tuesday due to the weather conditions triggered by the cyclone. Several trees were seen lying uprooted in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, Alibag areas while huge waves and high tides were seen in Ratnagiri and other coasts in Maharashtra.

Currently, there are 10 potential vaccines undergoing clinical trials while another 123 candidates are in the preclinical evaluation stage, according to latest WHO data. Novavax has said the US Defence Department will give them $60 million funding for coronavirus vaccine manufacturing.
