Fight against drought - Rainwater harvesting and De-silting - Water problem in chennai

We all are aware that TamilNadu, especially Chennai is witnessing a severe drought. The water levels in Chennai's four main reservoirs have recorded one of its lowest levels in seven decades, with the current quantities adding upto only 1.3% of the total capacity. This is the fifth lowest quantity of water recorded in the last 74 years, making it one of the worst droughts the city has witnessed. According to the data from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Chembarambakkam Lake has only 1mcft of water compared to its capacity of 3645 mcft, Redhills has 28 mcft compared to 3300 mcft of storage, Poondi contains 118 mcft of water, as opposed to its storage of 3231 mcft and Cholavaram, has 4 mcft compared to a total capacity of 1081 mcft

The hopes for good rainfall this season is actually less to moderate, according to TamilNadu Weatherman Pradeep John. Most of the ground is covered by tar road and concrete floors, which leaves very little or no way for the surface water to reach underground. This leads to very less replenishment of the groundwater. As of now, the best we can do is Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) in every home. This will be a long term solution too. It is high time for the public to take the necessary steps to do RWH in their home. Govt shall reach out to people who might find it difficult to do it on their own and assist them to implement it.

Also, most of the water bodies are not cleaned periodically. We request the Govt to do de-silting of all the water bodies so that we can save every drop of rain water.

The Tamilnadu Water supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) and Chennai Municipal Administration and Water supply can take further steps to solve the water crisis.
