TAMIL MOVIE - ROBOT - RAJNI, SHANKAR , AR REHMANN

ROBOT - ORIGIN

DIGGING for gold appears to have become superstar Rajinikanth's favourite pastime. As if the Rs 80-crore blockbuster Sivaji ? The Boss was not enough, filmdom's money spinning hero has now signed up for India's costliest movie. Pegged at Rs 100 crore, director Shankar's Robot, a science fiction film, will see Rajni replace King of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan as hero.

London-based Ayngaran International, in which Kishore Lulla-owned Eros International picked up a controlling stake last July, is to produce the film. Robot will be released in five languages for a global audience. This dream project of Shankar was also to be produced by SRK's Red Chillies Entertainment. In fact, last year, the film had been planned featuring filmdom's other cash king Shah Rukh Khan. However, owing to differences between Shankar and SRK on the creative front, as acknowledged by the latter in recent statements, the film was dropped about two months ago.

Observers say, given Shankar's penchant for large canvas presentations the cost of production of Robot could even cross the Rs 100-crore mark, setting a new Indian record. "Ayngaran and Eros Multimedia will be jointly producing Robot featuring Rajinikanth and directed by Shankar. The formal agreements will be signed soon," Ayngaran International CEO Rohan Manickavasagar told ET on Friday from London.Eros and Ayngaran had together distributed Sivaji globally, which is said to have grossed between Rs 150 crore to Rs 170 crore from both the domestic and overseas markets. "Robot will be a joint production. The film will take anywhere between 18 to 24 months for completion and will be produced at a cost in excess of Rs 100 crore," Mr Manickavasagar said.

The film will be made in Tamil, but will be released in five languages, including Hindi and Telugu, besides a couple of other regional languages. "It will also have stars from Bollywood. But these finer details will be finalised in due course," he added.Shankar had originally wanted to do Robot with Kamal Hassan over five years ago for Media Dreams, the now defunct film arm of Chennaibased Pentamedia Graphics. Somewhere down the line, even Hritik Roshan's name came up for serious consideration. But Rajini appears to have swung it yet again. With Rajinikanth becoming a national phenomenon after Sivaji, which also generated interests in international markets, Robot is expected to be marketed in a big way overseas too. Tamil films have a huge market in the UK, USA, Canada, France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Australia and the Middle-East.

IN ROBOT TEAM
Two departments of film making -- Art and Cinematography are very important especially when you are making a futuristic film like Robot. So Shankar has signed up his favourite art director Sabu Cyril, probably the finest set designer in India, and the new and happening cinematographer Nirav Shah for the film.

Sabu has a tough job as Robot can be shot only on studio sets as the story is taking place in futuristic Chennai of the year 3000, according to the original one-line script of the director. Nirav, too, has a real difficult task ahead as he has to decide, in consultation with Shankar, the all important "look" of the film. Will they go for a "Star Wars" futuristic look for the film? It is early days, but Shankar and his new team are going to take many weeks before they firm up the futuristic look of the film. After everything synchronies with the script, only then will the heroine and other star cast will be decided.

STORY SPECULATION
Though the film's thread is not confirmed, the name 'Robot' and widely-speculated media reports suggest the story is about a maverick scientist who creates a robot and later runs into trouble with his pet creation. When the movie does hit the screen, Shankar, known for his expertise in state-of-the-art film-making technique, could thrill filmgoers, especially Rajnikanth fans wordwide. Film buffs and Rajnikanth fans say if the duo team up again, it could be "explosive".

Rajinikanth and Aishwarya starrer became furious

Breathtakingly beautiful Aishwarya Rai proved how irresistible she is at a recent shooting schedule in Goa. The actress had to be safeguarded by 40 odd security guards on the sets of Shankar's 'Endhiran' (previously titled Robot), as the director anticipated the presence of paparazzi.

To ensure that the former Miss World's shooting went smoothly, Shankar hired the security guards to stop anybody from clicking pictures of the shoot. According to reports,  Shankar, who is directing the big budget Rajinikanth and Aishwarya starrer became furious when someone leaked the stills of the film's recent shoot in Peru and splashed it all over the internet. Shankar, who is known to be a perfectionist, didn't want to take any chances, and therefore covered the area so that no trespasser could catch a glimpse of what was going on inside. Inside reports suggest that Rajini and Ash's look in the movie is a surprising secret and the movie is being touted as Rajini's biggest blockbuster till date.

Heavy rain dampens Enthiran shoot

The shooting of superstar Rajini's magnum opus Enthiran is going on in Chennai in a full fledged scale. After having completed a schedule in Hyderabad, the crew is now camping in Chennai to shoot a major portion.

According sources, Director Shankar had planned to film a few important sequences in a magnificent set erected by art director Sabu Cyril within the premises of a city school during the last two days. However the rain played spoilsport and the set was damaged. So the shooting had to be cancelled.

It has been learnt that the shooting will continue for the next few days in South Chennai.

Actress Aishwarya Rai who is playing the female lead in the film, is expected to arrive in the city by mid-December.

Recently, the Superstar had requested his fans to refrain from celebrating his birthday, falling on December 12. However, for the fans in the city, the shooting which is to take place will definitely offer some excitement around that time.

Vishnuvardhan back in Tamil with Rajini

Vishnuvardhan, the actor known for his superb acting skills in Kannada film industry is once again returning to Tamil and that too with his long time friend, superstar Rajinikanth.

Vishnuvardhan, who played a prominent role in the Rajinikanth Sivaji starrer Viduthalai in the eighties, will back to do a similar role now.

According to the Tamil film industry sources, Vishnuvardhan has been signed to do a cameo in the movie Enthiran. It may be the role of a goody.

Enthiran, the mega budget film produced by Ayngaran Internationals, is a tri-lingual film. The producer is now planning to release the dubbed versions of the film in several Indian languages including Kannada.

Santhanam, the comedian in Enthiran

Neither Vadivelu nor Vivek will play the comic role in Kuselan. Santhanam, the young and upcoming actor has been given the prestigious opportunity to play the main comedian role in superstar Rajinikanth's dream project Enthiran – The Robot.

The main comedy track gels very well with one of the roles performed by Rajini in the film. Rajini's comedy
sequences in this movie will set new standards like the ones he performed in movies like Rajathi Raja, Annamalai, Veera, Muthu and Chandramukhi.

For Santhanam it is a big surprise and an unexpected gift from the superstar.

Meanwhile, the Enthiran unit will soon shift to the picturesque locations of Valparai and Top slip in the Anamalai hills near Coimbatore.

It may be recalled that the shooting of major portions of Superstar's blockbuster movie Rajathi Raja was done in the many locations of Anamalai.

Rajni s Endhiran cleared of roadblock Sun group chips in

Chennai : Touted as one of the most expansive and expensive project in Indian film Industry, Tamil Superstar Rajnikanth's latest film ''Endhiran,'' will now be produced by Sun Pictures, a division of Sun Network.

An agreement to this effect was clinched by Rajnikanth and film Director K Shankar after a meeting with Sun Group Chairman and Managing Director Kalanidhi Maran last evening.

The multi-lingual project, featuring Aishwarya Rai as the female lead, had hit a roadblock due to some financial problems.

Howewer, the project was now back on rails after the meeting.

The film would be released simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and other languages by the end of next year.

''I am very happy and honoured to work in the first production of Sun Pictures,'' a jubilant Rajinikanth said, emerging out of the meeting held at Maran's Boat Club residence.

He was optimistic that the film would be a ''mega hit'' in the box office.

Echoing similar sentiments, Mr Maran said this was a big moment for Sun Pictures. ''We are confident this film will be India's biggest-ever movie and we are happy to be associated with the superstar.'' Sun's COO Hansraj Saxena said he had approached Rajinikanth two years ago and insisted that Sun's first production should be his film. ''We are proud it has become a reality now.'' With an array of Hollywood technicians, including Mary E Vogt, the costume designer for ''Batman'' and stunt master Yuen Ping of ''Matrix fame'' involved in this big budget project, the film promises awe-inspiring stunt sequences and computer graphics and would deliver world class picture quality.

Renowned music director A R Rahman would score the music for the film, which was expected to be ready in 18 months time. Two song sequences feature Rajni and Aishwarya were completed abroad.

The shooting for the science-fiction film, co-produced by the Mumbai-based Eros International and Ayngaran International started in Peru in September. It suddenly hit a road block before the Sun Group stepped in to fund the multi-crore project, bringing cheers among the scores of Rajni's fans.

Why did Enthiran shift to Sun Pictures?

CHENNAI: Touted to be India's costliest movie, with superstar Rajinikanth and the 'Bachchan bahu' in the lead, director Shankar's 'Enthiran' - The Robot has passed hands from Eros International and Ayngaran International to Sun Pictures. The movie, said to cost Rs 150 crore, has completed three schedules so far, including those in Peru, Goa, and Chennai.

While Eros International had backed out of the project owing to a financial crisis more than a week ago, Ayngaran's sudden withdrawal from the project has given rise to speculation. While the production house remains tightlipped on the issue, industry sources claim that the movie, for which two songs have been completed, had already exceeded a production cost of Rs 30 crore, and Ayngaran had wanted to tighten its purse strings.

But director Shankar, known for his grand ways, it is learnt, had been insistent on having the movie shot with the original budget that it was planned for. But Ayngaran, which had entered production through 'Aegan', was not ready to shell out so much money at a time when the biggest stars in Kollywood have not been able to give hits this year.

While Ayngaran still has many movies in hand, including 'Peraanmai' with Jayam Ravi, 'Villu' with Vijay, 'Angadi Theru', 'Sarvam', it has opted out of the Rajini-starrer, which it originally had announced would be a Rs 100-crore film. 'Enthiran' has the biggest names in the business, including Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, A R Rahman and Shankar. It will be released simultaneously in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu by 2009-end.

For Sun Pictures, which has now officially announced that it will produce the movie, this is the first direct production venture. It has acquired the movies of other production houses like 'Kadhalil Vizhundhen', 'Siva Manasula Sakthi' and 'Thenavattu.'

While the Rajini starrer has shifted hands, Kamal Haasan's 'Marmayogi' has also been shelved due to financial constraints. And big corporates in the State, including Pyramid Saimira, are said to be facing financial constraints, thus delaying the shoot of many movies.

Endhiran in Chennai

It is heard that director Shankar is holding the shooting of Endhiran (also referred to as Enthiran and formerly known as Robot) on East Coast Road. Actually, the Endhiran crew should have been filming a few scenes pertaining to Rajni and Aishwarya Rai in Kulu Manali as per their original schedule, but this change of plan is because Aishwarya Rai is working in Kerala in Mani Ratnam's Ravana and Ashokavanam. So Shankar decided that he will go ahead with the portions involving Rajinikanth without waiting for the slender and beautiful Aishwarya Rai. We have to appreciate Shankar's empathy and patience. He has been making quite a lot of adjustments in Endhiran's schedule for Aishwarya Rai's sake – he feels grateful to her for agreeing to act in his film despite her preoccupation with Mani Ratnam's bilingual.

Also, one cannot help marveling at Shankar's ingenuity and flexibility; if one plan goes down, there is always a plan B or C for him and they have all been very meticulously planned. But the industry is surprised as this could be the first time a Rajinikanth film is facing change of schedule due to a heroine's non-availability! Well, there is not much sting in this surprise as the heroine in question is Aishwarya Rai! It is also heard that this stop-gap action will be for two weeks; a considerable portion of the film which involves Rajinikanth will be shot during this period.

Whatever it could be, Sun Pictures could be a international company.

But they are just beginners to the industry and they have money to launch any industry and they have never launched to make the industry successful.

Finally My Hero's big project is going to flop.
  :agree

Kalyan

Dont think abt production unit alone and collapse your hero project as flop..if your hero action and story makes  the real thing to touch the feel of audience heart..it may success.. Now a days all are aware about the current status of Tamil industry.. Most of the people going to theater for Story, artists performance else  music and in rare cases Hero / Director.. Hope shankar will not disappoint, bcz most of them are not convinced in Sivaji..Even me too....

What ever the production, Hardwork will pay the success.. If Jaya TV or Raj TV produce this films it may success..Dont show your response on Sun pictures..come out and think abt the forth level of tamil industry..May be the film success or may not be..But, they surely production will success with in day.

Everyone knows that. But there is a seperate image for the Hero.

I said the hero's image will be spoiled.

Ok, say an example . Who were Sun Pictures, they are not big banner.

There ultimate aim only to buy flim either hit neither flop.

Its there count , but its not for my Rajini's History.

Every movie is a Life Line for his story and him.

So i got feared about the upcoming movie. Nothing about Jaya Tv or Raj Tv purchase it.

Director Shankar's dream of making it to Hollywood might well come true, thanks to the efforts of Sun Pictures, who has taken over the production rights of the director's mega Project Endhiran: The Robot. The production house is on the verge of a tie-up with HBO which will see Enthiran being released in the West simultaneously.

Sun Pictures has been striding in where others fear to tread. It is releasing small-budget films that would have otherwise floundered in today's market, and turning them into box-office hits with aggressive marketing and shrewd campaign. The success of Kaadhalil Vilzunden, Thenavettu and last week's release Dindugal Sarathi might not have been possible without Sun Pictures' effort.

The timing of Sun Pictures' entry is more significant. It has entered the field with vigor, when many corporate filmmakers are struggling to stay in the field in this grim economic scenario.

When Ayangaran and Eros started to back off from Shankar's mega-budget Enthiran, Sun Pictures came to the rescue, taking over the film and getting Shankar and Rajini to announce it on TV. Enthiran's budget has now crossed Rs. 150 crores, according to the sources.

Sun Picturs has plans to market Enthiran abroad with English subtitles. It will be released in Hollywood simultaneously, making it the biggest opening for the Tamil film industry. It might just be a wise move given the popularity of Shankar, rajinikanth, and of cource, Aishwarya Rai in US. It may be recalled that Rajini - Shankar's Shivaji had raked in good money overseas.

Rajinikanth to trim down for Aishwarya

The shooting of superstar Rajini's magnum opus and director Shankar's dream project Endhiran was progressing recently at the prestigious Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) in Vellore.

A Tamil weekly magazine has now disclosed the shooting of a particular scene of the film in its recent issue.

According to the reports, the highly guarded shoot involved the lead pair Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Bachchan.

The scene involved Ash being wooed by Rajini in the movie. Aishwarya, apparently plays a college student in the movie and Rajinikanth plays a scientist and a robot.

The scene that was shot in the VIT campus involved Rajinikanth entering the college in a Benz car and blocking Aishwarya Rai and wooing her with his punchline comedy.

The crew was shooting in Vellore for a couple of days and then Rajini spoke of his intention to look trim and fit to match Aishwarya.

Soaring expectations for 'Enthiran'

The online space is virtually flooded with speculation about the story of actor Rajinikanth's Enthiran . As it is director Shankar's film, many think that the film may have a "social message."

While several guesses are doing the rounds, the crew is said to be busy shooting the climax fight sequence at a massive set put up in South Chennai. The industry sources said the set, designed by Thotta Tharani, would leave fans awe-struck. The sequence reportedly features the protagonist - a scientist played by Rajinikanth, fighting with 300 robots, his look-alikes. The shooting has been on for nearly a fortnight and is expected to be completed within 10 days. Earlier, a song featuring the actor dancing in 100 different styles was shot at the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. The film promises to be a treat for the 'super star' fans, with a generous dosage of graphics and special effects. With Aishwarya Rai Bachchan playing the female lead, and A.R. Rahman scoring the music, expectations continue to rise .

Endhiran songs leaked on internet

Director Shankar, superstar Rajnikanth and entire team of Endhiran are blown out of temper to witness a couple of songs from the film leaked on Youtube.com. Endhiran, a Rupees 120 Crore flick; was earlier produced by Ayngaran International and EROS International. With the cost exceeding above the line, Sun Pictures took over the production work.

With the film's shooting almost complete, director Shankar was shocked to see the 4-minute footage of Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Bachchan rehearsing with group dancers for a song. Posted with top-notching visual and audio, Youtube has recorded 17,000 hits.

A.R. Rahman's musical score for the film must have evoked everyone's interest on viewing the visuals. Since the visual isn't posted officially with copyright infringement, Youtube has refused to remove it from the portal.
