Heavy Rains Predicted in Chennai on 1st & 2nd December - New Cyclone Nada

Chennai rains are all set to make a comeback with the possible cyclonic storm in Bay of Bengal nearing the coast.

As predicted by Skymet Weather, the well-marked low pressure area in southeast Bay of Bengal has been intensifying rapidly since the last 12 hours. The system is now sustaining a strength of a deep depression and has a full potential of concentrating into a cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours. If this happens, it will be named as  Cyclone 'Nada'.

It is moving in the west-northwest direction towards the Tamil Nadu coast and is most likely to cross the coast somewhere between Vedaranniyam and Chennai by late night of December 1 or early morning hour of December 2.

The deep depression is presently centered at 7.8°N and 85.7°E, about 820 km in east-southeast of Chennai, 770 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 490 km east-southeast of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.

In wake of this approaching system, light to moderate rains are likely to commence over Chennai and nearby coastal areas of Tamil Nadu by the Wednesday evening. Weather conditions have also become cloudy over the state capital.

Weathermen predict that these rains and thundershowers are likely to intensify significantly by December 1. Heavy to very heavy rains are expected to lash Chennai on December 1 and 2.

Wind speed will also pick up pace and people across the coastal city may witness squally wind with the speed of 50-60 kmph gusting up to 80 kmph. Sea will be rough to very rough and locals are advised to stay away from the beach.

Fishermen are also advised not to venture in the sea along and off the coast from the evening of November 30.
