Power shutdown tomorrow

There will be no power supply on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Amarjyothi Layout, Krishna Reddy Layout, parts of Domlur Layout, Diamond District, Srinivagilu, Domlur, Ejipura, Srinivasa Palya, parts of Koramangala and surrounding areas owing to maintenance work, according to a Bescom release.

CHENNAI: Encouraged by the current rate of inflow into reservoirs in the State, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) is optimistic that hydel generation during 2009-2010 will exceed the forecast.

The optimism is based on the fact that the south-west monsoon is turning vigorous and the Nilgiris group of hydel reservoirs receiving higher inflow of late.

On Saturday morning, storage in all the hydel reservoirs, including Mettur, was 1,436 million units (MU). This was only 389 MU at the beginning of the month. [The details of storage and inflow are expressed in terms of MU as the quantum of possible power generation is arrived at taking them into account].

The total capacity of the reservoirs is about 2,397 MU. On the corresponding day last year, the storage was 575.7 MU. Inflow into the reservoirs was 182 MU, of which the Nilgiris group accounted for 110 MU. For the current financial year, the Board has estimated that it will generate 5,090 MU through its hydel stations. Though this accounts for eight or nine per cent of the annual gross generation, the hydel stations provide flexibility in grid operations and will come in handy in times of steep decline in generation caused by any major breakdown of thermal power stations.

Noting that this is for the first time that the Board has prepared a generation forecast plan on the basis of a statistical model, officials say August, September and October will witness generation of 699 MU, 639 MU and 571 MU. In November and December, the generation will be 421 MU and 367 MU.

Between April and June, the hydel stations generated only 744 million units as against the expected 944 MU, a shortfall of 200 MU. But, in the last 17 days, the generation picked up and the shortfall came down to around 140 MU.

The officials explain that since 2005-2006, the generation has been in the range of 5,400 MU to 6,455 MU.

The projection for the current year is only a conservative estimate.

NEYVELI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Jayalalithaa on Sunday promised a power-cut free Tamil Nadu if returned to power in 2011.

It would be her priority to tide over power shortage within months of coming back to power and ensure uninterrupted supply round the clock to all sections of society, she said while addressing a demonstration here to protest against the failure of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government on the power front.

During the AIADMK rule till May 2006 the State was surplus in power. Now it had turned power deficient. The entire State had been plunged into darkness and day-to-day life had come to a standstill, affecting the economy.

However, ruling party functionaries, government officials, dignitaries and foreign companies in Chennai were assured of 24-hour supply while the rest of Tamil Nadu was sweating it out.

She cited the following reasons for the present state of affairs: dismal functioning of thermal stations owing to lack of maintenance and administrative lapses, corruption in the TNEB, reduction in Tamil Nadu's share from the Central power grid and import of substandard quality coal.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was not staking claim to the State's rightful share from the Central grid for fear of losing power and was passing on the blame to her.

Ms Jayalalithaa said that during her regime the total installed power generation capacity was 10,011 MW, which had now declined to 7,300 MW.

The Chief Secretary had gone on record stating that the power situation would not improve before 2011, implying that as long as the present DMK government lasted, there would be no respite from power cut.

TNEB losses

Besides causing immense hardships to all sections of society by imposing frequent power cuts, both scheduled and unscheduled, the Karunanidhi government had inflicted losses to the tune of Rs.2,522 crore on the TNEB.

She alleged that in the procurement of coal, corruption was taking place. For instance, about 2.1 million tonnes of coal was being imported annually from Indonesia at $103 a tonne, while the actual cost was $82, thereby causing a loss of $44 million (Rs.200 crore).
