'Fuel famine' continues for 2nd day in TN

Petrol bunks across the city and suburbs witnessed panic buying for the second day today with many  retail outlets displaying 'out of stock' boards or fighting to cope with short supply.

The long queue of vehicles, especially two wheelers, which spilled on to the roads, led to traffic congestion on several stretches.

Heated arguments were common at the bunks, where customers, taking the spree of panic-buying to a new high, turned up with large plastic containers and bottles.

Police personnel were deployed at various petrol stations to regulate thousands of motorists, who thronged the outlets fearing acute fuel shortage in the city, reeling under limited fuel supplies for the past couple of days.

The likely impact of the indefinite lorry strike, called by the All India Motor Transport Congress from midnight tonight, has further increased the anxiety of the motorists.

Tamil Nadu Petroleum 8Dealers' Association President M Kannan said the long queues were due to limited quantity of fuel supplied by some of the public sector oil companies.

However, the oil companies have assured that the shortage was only temporary, caused by 'supply dislocation' and the situation would be normalised soon.

Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary held discussions with senior officials of the companies with regard to the sales position and the stock availability.

Officials of the companies were directed to take immediate steps to ensure that enough stock of petrol and diesel was available for sale.

Oil companies also informed that there would be an immediate action plan to control the shortage of fuel and restore normalcy.

CHENNAI: Describing the fuel scarcity as a temporary development, Chief Secretary L K Tripathy on Tuesday asserted that the shortage in Chennai would come to an end by Tuesday evening as more supply of fuel would be arriving in the city from all possible quarters.

Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat after holding discussions with the representatives of oil companies, the Chief Secretary admitted that the problem in Chennai was acute.

Urging the public not to panic, he gave details about the arrangements being made to tide over the situation. The truckloads of fuels to Chennai have been increased. For example, the IOC had increased its truckloads from 370 to 438 on Tuesday. The CPCL has hiked its supply to the HPCL and BPCL by 2,000 KL each.

The ship consignment carrying 30,000 kl of diesel would be arriving in Chennai on Wednesday. Apart from this, oil stocks from the districts were being diverted to Chennai. As all these supplies would be carried to the pumps from Tuesday evening, the situation would be eased out, he added.

"The State Government had taken serious note of the development at the highest level. The Chief Minister who is highly concerned about this has written to Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora to solve the issue immediately'', Tripathy said.

He said the consumption of petrol and diesel had gone up by 19 per cent and 20 per cent respectively compared to the situation in May 2007. However, he said he was not defending the oil companies for the present shortage of fuel.

yes kalyan,

:agree that the government is not the only one to blame.

But they should take some alternative solution instead of being idle.

Real fact of this problem is because of the "oil & petrol producing countries" . They can produce more & export more per day, but they
are doing it simply because they fear that the price may go
[blink]DOWN[/blink].

Sudhakar

Thanks for this excellent replies Acumens.

For ex, if tomorrow petrol is going to hike.

These Local Petrol bunk authorites, will shut down the bunk now.
When they open after petrol hike, think about their income.

1 - liter - Rs. 3 extra

Then for 100 Liters - They earn - 300 Extra.

10000 Liters - 30000 Rs Extra.

50000 Liters for one under tank - Rs. 1,50,000

Hope there are around 8 big under tanks in the petrol bunk - 8 tanks * Rs.1,50,000 per tank

[blink]Rs . 12,00,000 (or) Rupee Twelve Lakh Ruppes just for stocking one day petrol during hike time .[/blink]

And that 12 lakhs will be only profit and not comes in to invesment or share.

cool Petrol . . . 8) :-* :'(
