Faced with a shortage of staff and officers, the Air Force is hiring professional publicists to gain an edge over corporate entities in attracting young people.

"We are taking the help of professional agencies. In today's world, the youth look for careers in corporates. We want them to know that a job with the Air Force can be equally attractive," Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Air Command, Air Marshal S K Bhan told reporters.

The IAF was also broadbasing its Short Service Commissions to attract more youth into the IAF, he said after inaugurating the Eastern Air Command's first placement fair for retired air-warriors at the IAF station here.

"Our understanding is that the youth find the SSC more attractive because they need not be locked up for more than five years in the service," Bhan said, adding that the Sixth Pay Commission would also be an attraction for potential job seekers with the IAF.

About 3,000 personnel would be selected by 23 companies during the two-day fair, organised in keeping with the Defence Ministry's declaration of 2007-08 as year of ex-servicemen.

Twenty-three private companies representing a variety of sectors like aviation, small gadgets manufacturers, security agencies, health, insurance have registered to select 2500 retired personnel in the fair starting here on May 17.

More than 3,000 retired IAF personnel found employment in the first placement fair organised by the IAF in Delhi.
