ESIC to open 9 medical colleges in Delhi

New Delhi: The Employees State Insurance Corporation of India (ESIC) has been granted permission to open up 9 medical colleges at its existing campus in the capital.

Speaking at the Health Insurance Summit organized by ASSOCHAM (Associated Chambers of Commerce and industry of India) here, ESIC Insurance Commissioner Mr. B.C. Bhardwaj disclosed that the Central Government, in consultation with the Medical Council of India (MCI), has given its approval to ESIC for opening up of 9 medical colleges in Delhi.

Mr. Bhardwaj also informed that the ESIC would commence the first session of its medical colleges from October 2009, since necessary permissions and approvals have been obtained.

"The ESIC hospitals have buildings and space in its possession and the only thing required is to put up necessary laboratory facilities which it would not have any problem and therefore, the session would commence as scheduled", Bhardwaj said.

He further added that the Government's permission to ESIC to start the medical colleges is in view of the acute shortage of qualified doctors, which in case of Delhi, is estimated at around 12,000.

"The move will ensure that medical education is imparted to a majority of aspirants", Bhardwaj said.

Regarding the opening up of a number of other medical colleges, Mr. Bhardwaj said that initially the ESIC would open up the medical colleges in Delhi and thereafter carry forward the initiative to other states.
